Thailand national team coach Anthony Hudson offered praise for Indonesia as host of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup. In a press conference ahead of the final against Indonesia at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Central Jakarta, Monday (5-10-2026) evening WIB, Hudson called Jakarta a beautiful place with adequate facilities and a classy stadium.
The praise was not merely a formality. For Thailand, the final will be their first experience playing at SUGBK throughout this tournament. During the Group B phase, the War Elephants squad was based at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung Regency. The move to Jakarta demands quick adaptation, especially regarding pitch quality and a stadium atmosphere that is vastly different.
Hudson acknowledged that the defeat to the Philippines in the final Group B match was in fact used to rest several key players. He made sweeping rotations to preserve the fitness of key players such as Chanathip Songkrasin and colleagues. The strategy paid off: Thailand enters the final in fresher physical condition than opponents who played at full strength in every match.
"We feel fortunate because we were able to rest many players in the previous match. We enter this match with a squad that is fresh, fit, and ready to compete," Hudson said.
From a tactical standpoint, Hudson's decision reflects careful calculation. A tournament with a packed schedule demands meticulous player load management. By giving their stars a break, Thailand could field its best strength from the opening minute. Indonesia, playing as host, must be wary of this.
For Indonesia, Hudson's praise is both a positive signal and pressure. Host status is often a double-edged sword: supporter backing can be extra energy, but public expectation also weighs heavily. SUGBK, which usually roars when Indonesia plays, will be a mental test for both teams.
The praise for the facilities and stadium also implies that Indonesia is considered successful in hosting a tournament of ASEAN Cup caliber. This is valuable capital for Indonesia's bid to host other international football events in the future. The experience of managing matches in two cities, Jakarta and Bandung, demonstrates infrastructure and event management readiness.
Yet above all that, the final will still come down to who is more effective on the pitch. Thailand arrives with a relatively fresher squad, while Indonesia has the advantage of playing before its own supporters. The question is, will Hudson's rotation strategy prove effective, or will the host's momentum speak? The answer will be seen in 90 minutes at SUGBK.
