Arsenal are facing another injury problem after winger Christos Tzolis suffered a hamstring issue while playing for Greece in the UEFA Nations League match against the Netherlands in Thessaloniki, early Friday (2/10) WIB. Tzolis lasted only 18 minutes before being withdrawn by coach Ivan Jovanovic, even though he had pushed to stay on.
The incident lengthens Arsenal's list of players injured while on international duty. Previously, Kai Havertz also suffered an injury, while captain Martin Odegaard took a hard tackle from Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva while playing for Norway. The situation is a blow for manager Mikel Arteta, who is preparing for a packed schedule in the Premier League and Champions League.
According to a Metro report, Tzolis initially looked in pain and covered his face with his shirt while lying on the touchline. However, he was later able to move more freely and asked to keep playing. Jovanovic still decided to withdraw him as a precaution. "I told him to come off, but he said he didn't want to come off. That is the character of Greeks and young players who play for the national team," Jovanovic said.
The impact of Tzolis's injury is felt not only by Greece but also by Arsenal, who are competing tightly at the top of the Premier League. Losing a creative winger reduces Arteta's attacking options, especially with an attacking style that relies on speed and dribbling. If Tzolis has to miss several weeks, Arsenal may need to change formation or give opportunities to young players.
In a broader context, the phenomenon of players getting injured on international duty is back in the spotlight. European clubs often complain about the packed international calendar and the lack of recovery time. Arsenal, who have big ambitions this season, must be wary of the risk of a string of injuries that could disrupt the team's consistency.
"I told him to come off the pitch but he said, 'I don't want to come off'. This is what characterizes Greeks as well as the young players who come to play for the national team." โ Ivan Jovanovic, Greece coach
Going forward, Arsenal will monitor Tzolis's condition through further medical examinations. If the hamstring injury is minor, he may only miss one to two matches. However, if it is more serious, Arsenal must be prepared to lose one of their wingers during a crucial period. How Arteta works around the squad's limitations will be a tactical test in itself.
