President Prabowo Subianto expressed deep condolences over the passing of Mohammad Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra, the younger brother of PDIP Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri. Guruh breathed his last on Saturday (26/9) after undergoing treatment at Siloam Hospital. Prabowo conveyed the news of the bereavement through the Stories feature of his personal Instagram account, @Prabowo, which displayed a sketch of the deceased accompanied by words of condolence.
In his post, Prabowo wrote, "Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raaji'uun. Turut berduka cita atas wafatnya Mohammad Guruh Irianto Soekarno Putra." The statement served as an official marker that the government was paying its last respects to one of the central figures in Indonesia's political and cultural history.
Guruh was born in 1953 and studied at Perguruan Cikini, SMA Negeri 25 Jakarta, and briefly pursued Archaeology studies at the University of Amsterdam until 1974. He later earned a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration from STIAMI (2005-2008) and a Master's in Management with a concentration in Human Resources in 2010. His cross-disciplinary academic background reflected his broad interests, from history to management.
In the arts, Guruh was known as a maestro of dance and music. He founded the arts group Swara Mahardika and GSP Production, and formed Guruh Gipsy and Gank Pegangsaan with Keenan Nasution, Abadi Soesman, and Chrisye. His compositions were not only popular in their time but also became part of Indonesia's musical heritage that continues to be remembered.
"Guruh's passing leaves a deep wound for the extended Soekarno family and all Indonesians," said a political colleague who declined to be named.
In politics, Guruh joined PDI in 1982 and remained loyal until it transformed into PDIP in 1999. He served as a DPR RI member for five terms, from 1999 to 2024, representing the East Java electoral district. Though not always prominent in legislative debates, his presence served as a bridge between Soekarno's legacy and contemporary political dynamics.
Guruh's passing closes a long chapter of the Soekarnoputra family on the national political stage. The public now awaits how PDIP and the government will pay their last respects, and whether there is a political message Megawati wishes to convey through this moment. What is clear is that Indonesia has lost an artist and politician who devoted his life to two worlds that can rarely be united.
