Discord Begins Global Age Verification Rollout, 90% of Users Won't Need Confirmation

Discord officially began rolling out its global age verification policy this week, a move that has drawn controversy since it was announced in February. Chief Technology Officer and Discord co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy stressed that about 90% of users will not be asked to confirm their age manually. The policy marks the end of a delay the company had previously announced until the second half of 2026.

In an official blog post titled "Safer for Teens, Same Discord for Adults," Vishnevskiy explained that Discord automatically sorts users into several age categories based on account signals, such as how long an account has been active and the types of servers joined. The company claims the method has biometric-level accuracy, but stresses that no single server determines a person's age group, and that Discord does not scan users' messages, calls, or private content.

Users can check their age group status through the "Account Status" page in account settings. Because the rollout is happening gradually throughout this week, some users may not yet see any changes. For adults, there is no significant change in how they interact. However, teens will face content restrictions, while users in the "unconfirmed" group will also be restricted from adult content until they verify.

For teens, the changes affect three main areas. First, messages from non-friends will go into a message request inbox so they can be reviewed first; turning this feature off requires adult confirmation. Second, sensitive images detected by the filter will be blurred or blocked, and age-restricted servers, channels, and bot commands cannot be accessed. Third, full profile details and activity are visible only to friends and members of small servers. "Unconfirmed" users face similar restrictions, except their profiles and activity remain visible to friends and all servers they have joined.

Discord offers several new verification methods beyond a video selfie or sharing an ID. Users can enter credit card information, allow the Apple App Store and Google Play Store to share an age group (not an exact birth date), use Google Wallet through an ID pass, or set up an AgeKey that works across platforms. The company stresses that the data provided is used only to determine an age group and is processed by vendors such as k-ID, which then sends an age-group signal to Discord. Vendors are required to delete data after verification, and for facial age estimation, processing must be done entirely on the user's device.

"We will not receive your name, credit card, ID, or face scan. Information is processed by vendors like k-ID, which then passes on an age-group signal. Vendors must delete data immediately after verification," Discord wrote in the blog's FAQ.

Even so, user skepticism remains high. Several Reddit comments voiced concerns about data security, especially after Discord was linked to a user data breach last fall. "Surely the selfie or ID photo you upload will be stored safely and not hacked, oh wait…" one popular comment read. Other users said they would stop using the app if asked to verify their ID, and some called the policy an attempt to harvest and sell data.

In Indonesia, the policy could affect Discord's large user base, especially among gamers and creative communities. Although Discord is not a dominant platform as it is in the United States, many gaming and developer communities in Indonesia rely on Discord for communication. Restrictions on access to adult servers and the need for age verification could change community dynamics, especially for younger users. In addition, the data privacy issue is a serious concern amid growing awareness of personal data protection in Indonesia, alongside the implementation of the Personal Data Protection Law that is taking effect.

Looking ahead, will this policy trigger a user exodus or instead increase parents' trust in the platform's safety? Discord appears to be betting that transparency and a range of verification options can ease concerns. However, with a security track record that has not fully recovered, the success of this policy will depend heavily on consistent data protection and clear communication to global users, including in Indonesia.
