Capcom marks a milestone: Resident Evil 3: Nemesis has turned 27 years old since its debut on the PlayStation console in Japan on September 22, 1999. The third game in the Resident Evil series brought Jill Valentine back as the main protagonist, surviving in an outbreak-ravaged Raccoon City while being hunted by Nemesis, a biological weapon that never stops pursuing her.
Unlike its predecessors, Nemesis made Jill the only playable character. The gameplay retained static camera angles, but players gained a new ability in the form of a shove to break free from an enemy's grasp. The most notable innovation was the choice system: at certain points, players had to choose one of two options that affected routes, item placement, and even the ending. This element gave a dimension of replayability rarely seen at the time.
Metacritic records a score of 91 for the original version, making it one of the best-reviewed survival horror games. Critics praised the chilling atmosphere, background design, music, and the terror built by Nemesis. Although the number of reviews is limited because Metacritic did not exist in 1999, the game's reputation remains strong among fans.
In 2020, Capcom re-released Nemesis in remake form, a year after the massive success of the Resident Evil 2 remake. However, the reception this time was very different. Many reviewers and fans felt the remake cut too much of the original material, making the playtime feel short. This controversy left a wound for some fans who believe Nemesis's legacy has not been properly cared for.
“Disappointment over the 2020 remake is still felt today. Many hope Capcom learns from that criticism for its next horror project,” said a game industry observer who declined to be named.
Indonesian context: the revival of the survival horror genre in 2026—marked by Konami's Silent Hill: Townfall and Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem—opens opportunities for the domestic game market. Fans in Indonesia are increasingly active in online communities, and the release of major horror games often triggers a surge in console and accessory sales. However, challenges remain: high AAA game prices and limited digital infrastructure are major obstacles. Nevertheless, enthusiasm for legacies like Nemesis shows that strong stories and mechanics can transcend generations.
Looking ahead, the question is not merely whether Capcom will remake Nemesis again more faithfully, but how the global horror industry will balance nostalgia with innovation. If the 2026 trend continues, fans in Indonesia and around the world may witness a new chapter in the evolution of survival horror—or a repeat of past mistakes.
