Actress Lili Reinhart revealed that she fell in love with Ali Hazelwood's novel The Love Hypothesis the first time she read it. That attraction was what led her to accept the offer to star in its film adaptation, playing Olive.
In an interview with People, Reinhart explained that the novel's main appeal lies in the strong friendship between two best friends. "I truly fell in love with the book and the characters. The fact that the entire plot begins with two best friends who love each other so deeply, that's what drew me in," she said.
Reinhart, who stars opposite Tom Bateman, feels fortunate to play a character she has loved from the start. She also praised the writing of the female characters in the novel, which she called very beautiful. "We both fell in love with these characters from the first page. I feel lucky to be able to play them," she added.
Meanwhile, Rachel Marsh, who plays Olive's best friend, said she started reading the novel after auditioning. She admitted she has now become a big fan of romance novels. "I didn't read many romance novels before, but now I love them. Now, that's my genre," she said.
Ali Hazelwood, the novel's author, gave her blessing and support for the film. Reinhart expressed her gratitude for that support. "We are so lucky to have such incredible support from her. She has truly shown love for this film and we are very grateful," Reinhart said.
"These are two people who shouldn't fit together. But because they do something to help a friend, they can truly see each other as they are," Tom Bateman said about the characters Olive and Adam.
Bateman also acknowledged the pressure that comes with adapting a famous novel. According to him, every reader has their own image of the characters, so the production team worked hard to meet expectations. "Everyone involved has a deep love for this book and wants to give the best for the fans," he explained.
The film adaptation of The Love Hypothesis is one of the projects awaited by romance novel fans. With the involvement of cast members who say they love the source material, the film is expected to satisfy loyal readers. However, its biggest challenge is translating readers' imaginations into visuals without losing the essence of the story.
For the Indonesian film industry, the phenomenon of popular novel adaptations is a valuable lesson. In recent years, local films adapted from bestselling novels such as Dilan 1990 and Mariposa have drawn large audiences. That success shows that a novel's fan base can be an initial asset, as long as the execution does not disappoint. Going forward, it will be interesting to see whether The Love Hypothesis can repeat a similar trend in the global market, including Indonesia.
