The Nintendo Switch 2 is about to get two of the most influential action-adventure titles of the past decade. Aspyr has announced that Middle-earth: Shadow Bundle—a compilation combining Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War—will launch on September 30. The news marks the first time the Shadow of Mordor series has come to a Nintendo platform, opening access for hybrid console players to explore a far darker and more personal version of Middle-earth.
This bundle is not just an ordinary port. Shadow of Mordor will arrive in its Game of the Year edition, which already includes the main expansions, while Shadow of War comes in the Definitive edition complete with all additional content. Both can also be purchased separately. The bundle's regular price is set at US$69.99, but pre-orders are currently available at a 50% discount, bringing it to US$34.99—an aggressive pricing strategy rarely seen for game releases on a new console.
For die-hard Tolkien fans, the main appeal of these two games lies in their narrative freedom. Rather than directly adapting the events of The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War offer original stories centered on Talion, a ranger of Gondor who is resurrected after being killed alongside his family. He allies with Celebrimbor, the spirit of the elf smith who forged the Rings of Power, and together they build an army to challenge Sauron from within Mordor. This approach allows for exploration of Middle-earth mythology without being strictly bound to the novel canon, giving developers room to create an experience that feels fresh while remaining faithful to Tolkien's world.
What makes these two games so memorable is the Nemesis System, a mechanic that revolutionized how players interact with enemies. The orcs in these games are not merely targets that can be killed without consequence. They can survive, remember previous battles, and rise through the ranks of Sauron's hierarchy. An orc that kills the player can become a rival who keeps haunting them, while those successfully subdued can be recruited into Talion's army. This system creates a unique narrative for each player, making Mordor a highly personal and dynamic playground.
“The Nemesis System gives every player a different version of Mordor, making adventures in Tolkien's world feel more alive and full of surprises,” Polygon wrote in its review.
Aspyr's decision to bring this franchise to the Switch 2 is also tied to the broader industry context. Nintendo is working to strengthen the Switch 2's position as a console capable of running heavyweight games, after previously being better known for familiar first-party titles. The arrival of Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War—two games that demand considerable graphical power and AI processing—signals that the Switch 2 is ready to compete in the hardcore gamer segment. For Aspyr, this move continues its strategy of reviving classic titles on modern platforms, as it did with War in the North some time ago.
In Indonesia, the console gaming market is indeed not as large as mobile gaming, but the Nintendo and Tolkien fan communities are quite solid. The presence of this bundle on Switch 2 could potentially attract the interest of Indonesian gamers who have relied on PC or PlayStation to play open-world games. The 50% pre-order discount is also an attraction in itself, though it should be noted that regional pricing for Indonesia has not been officially announced. If Aspyr applies competitive pricing, it is not impossible that the Switch 2 will become a gateway for new players to explore Middle-earth.
Looking ahead, the question is whether the Nemesis System will remain the main differentiator on the Switch 2, given that this console has a different architecture from PC and previous-generation consoles. If Aspyr succeeds in optimizing performance without sacrificing the depth of the mechanics, the Shadow Bundle could be one of the most interesting third-party releases on Switch 2 this year. However, if technical compromises occur, the enthusiasm that has been built up could evaporate. All eyes are now on September 30—will Mordor shake things up again, or will it lose its bite?
