Indonesia Futsal National Team Receives Brazil Invitation, a Mental Test at the 2026 Futsal Nations Cup

The Indonesia futsal national team has confirmed its participation in the 2026 Futsal Nations Cup, which will be held in Brazil this October. An official invitation from the Brazilian organizers was received by the Indonesian Futsal Association (AFI), placing the Merah Putih squad in Group B alongside Japan and Peru. This event is a rare opportunity for Indonesia to gauge its ability on the global stage, especially since Brazil is known as the mecca of world futsal.

The competition, also called the 2026 Copa Del Mundo Brasil, is scheduled to run from 12–18 October 2026, although some sources mention a 7–13 October window. The discrepancy in dates has not dampened the enthusiasm of the coaching staff, who have prepared thoroughly. For Indonesia, this is not merely an invitational tournament but a litmus test to prove that its achievements at the Asian level can carry over to a higher stage.

AFI Chairman Michael Victor Sianipar stated that the invitation is a strategic step to drive up the quality of national futsal. According to him, facing Brazil and other strong teams will provide valuable experience for the players, especially in terms of competitive mentality and tactics. "We want the players to experience the atmosphere of world-class competition, so they can bring valuable lessons back to the club and national team level," Michael said in an official statement.

On the technical side, Hector Souto has designed a long-term training camp and a series of friendlies against strong teams. The main focus is adaptation to the Latin American futsal style, which relies on speed and aggression. Souto believes Indonesian players have the potential to compete, provided they can adjust to a higher tempo of play. The tournament is also projected as a learning ground for young players earmarked for the squad.

"Our target is not only to win, but to show improved collective performance and build a winning mentality. This is a long-term investment for Indonesian futsal," Souto stressed.

Participation in Brazil is also a dream come true for the players. The chance to meet Japan and Peru, and potentially face Brazil, is expected to sharpen individual ability and teamwork. For many players, this is a stage to showcase their quality and attract the attention of overseas clubs. AFI itself views the tournament as a catalyst to draw more young talent into futsal.

It should be noted that this tournament in Brazil is different from the "Futsal Nation Cup 2026" held at GOR A. Yani, Pontianak, on 12–15 February 2026. The Pontianak event is an annual national competition run by the Indonesian Futsal Federation (FFI) for the top eight teams of the 2025/2026 Professional Futsal League, not the national team. In addition, there is the "Torneo VI Nations U17 Futsal 2026" involving the Indonesia U-17 Futsal National Team, as well as the "UEFA-CONMEBOL Futsal Finalissima 2026" in Rio de Janeiro on 6–8 November 2026 featuring Spain, Portugal, Brazil, and Argentina, without Indonesia.

With a packed schedule, Indonesia must make the most of every opportunity to learn. Being in Brazil is not only about the final result but also about how the players and coaching staff can adopt best practices from futsal's leading nations. If they can perform competitively, it is not impossible that Indonesia will be invited more often to world-class tournaments, while also improving its FIFA Futsal ranking.
