Soaring RAM Prices Pose Budget Challenge for 2026 Student Laptops

The 2026 student laptop market faces unusual cost pressures: RAM module prices have surged due to massive absorption by artificial intelligence companies, tightening device budgets for university and high school students. This situation forces parents and students to re-evaluate priorities, shifting from pursuing the highest specifications to seeking a balance between durability, weight, and price.
Several technology observers consider this year's RAM price increase the most significant supply disruption in the last decade. AI companies are reportedly absorbing global memory factory production capacity, leading to dwindling stock for consumer laptops and subsequent price hikes. Consequently, mid-range laptops typically sold in the 5โ7 million rupiah range could shift to 8โ10 million rupiah, depending on the brand and specifications.
Amidst this situation, previous year's laptop models are proving to be a lifesaver. Manufacturers and retailers in Indonesia generally offer significant discounts on 2024โ2025 models still in circulation. This strategy is considered more advantageous than forcing the purchase of the latest models at full price, especially since inter-generational performance improvements are not always commensurate with the price surge.
For students in Indonesia, the challenge doesn't stop at price. Model availability and official warranty are primary considerations. Many globally recommended laptops, such as the HP Omnibook Ultra or Lenovo Yoga 7i 2-in-1, are sold in Indonesia at higher prices due to taxes and distribution costs. Conversely, brands with extensive service networks like Asus, Acer, and Lenovo dominate local consumer choices.
From a needs perspective, engineering and design students still require laptops with discrete graphics cards, such as the Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 10 or Asus ROG Zephyrus G16. However, both are priced above 30 million rupiah in the Indonesian market, making them accessible only to certain segments. Alternatively, students can utilize campus labs or custom-built computers for heavy tasks, while thin laptops are used for daily mobility.
"The choice for student laptops is no longer about who is the fastest, but who is the most durable and doesn't burden your bag every day," said a computer retailer in Jakarta, describing the shift in consumer preferences.
For budgets under 5 million rupiah, Chromebooks and affordable Windows laptops remain popular. However, the limited access to Windows applications on Chromebooks is an obstacle for students who require specialized software like AutoCAD or SPSS. On the other hand, inexpensive Windows laptops often feature dim screens and plastic bodies, making them less comfortable to use in brightly lit classrooms.
In the mid-range segment, the Acer Aspire 16 and MacBook Neo offer compelling value. The Aspire 16, with its 16-inch screen and Intel Core Ultra 5 processor, is considered more productive for multitasking, while the MacBook Neo offers aluminum durability and a seamless Apple ecosystem. Both are in the 10โ12 million rupiah range in Indonesia, making them serious considerations for students who want a device that lasts up to four years.
Looking ahead, students and parents are advised to monitor RAM price movements and end-of-academic-year discounts. The government, through educational assistance programs, is also expected to expand access to suitable devices, given that laptops have become a basic necessity, no longer a luxury item. The question remains: will manufacturers introduce special student lines with controlled prices, or will they, conversely, become even further out of reach?
