A tech writer has revealed eight devices he regrets not buying sooner, as they have significantly improved his daily quality of life. In his article for Yahoo Tech, he admits that his skepticism towards new technology often caused him to miss out on substantial practical benefits.
This confession comes amid the increasing adoption of smart devices in modern households. Many consumers, especially in major cities, are beginning to realize that investing in devices like noise-cancelling earbuds, mesh Wi-Fi systems, and smart plugs can save time and reduce stress. However, high prices and skepticism towards new technology often act as barriers.
According to the writer, earbuds with active noise cancelling (ANC) features were one of his most belated purchases. For years, he was reluctant to spend more than $30 on earbuds until he finally tried AirPods Pro and experienced a significant difference. Now, ANC earbuds are an essential part of his daily kit, alongside his phone, wallet, and keys.
"I spent a lot of time and money on several pairs of cheap earbuds before finally realizing that sound quality and noise cancellation truly impacted my productivity," he wrote.
Beyond earbuds, he also recommends a mesh Wi-Fi system to replace traditional extenders. With nodes spread across each floor, the Wi-Fi signal becomes even and stable. Although not the latest technology, Wi-Fi 6 devices are considered sufficient for 4K streaming and general household needs.
To combat phone addiction, the writer uses the Brick app, which comes with a magnetic physical device. By placing the Brick in an inconvenient location, he successfully reduced his screen time by over 50 percent. He also installed a smart garage door opener that can be scheduled to close automatically, eliminating worries about forgetting to close the garage door.
In the kitchen, a smart plug is used to automatically turn on the coffee machine every morning. Meanwhile, for entertainment, he suggests buying a large-sized TV, as most people regret buying a TV that is too small. An 85-inch TV priced at $600 is considered an attractive offer.
Item trackers like the second-generation Apple AirTag are also recommended, featuring more accurate Precision Finding and wider Bluetooth range. Finally, he emphasizes the importance of having quality chargers and cables in every room to avoid clutter and speed up charging.
For Indonesian consumers, this trend reflects a shift towards an increasingly connected digital lifestyle. With growing internet penetration, devices like mesh Wi-Fi and smart plugs can be solutions for homes with unstable connections. However, local pricing and availability need to be considered. Some brands may not have officially entered the market, requiring consumers to purchase through imports or marketplaces.
Looking ahead, the adoption of smart devices in Indonesia is predicted to increase with falling prices and greater awareness of their benefits. The question remains: will consumers opt for a larger initial investment for long-term convenience, or stick with conventional devices?
