Rockstar Games has officially opened pre-orders for a premium physical collection for Grand Theft Auto VI titled The Goodtime State โ Vice City Collection. This limited-edition package is priced at US$399.99, or around Rp6.4 million (assuming an exchange rate of Rp16,000), but does not include a copy of the GTA VI game. Buyers must spend extra to purchase the game separately, with the standard edition priced at US$79.99 and the Ultimate Edition at US$99.99 on the PlayStation Store.
Rockstar's decision to sell merchandise without the game is nothing new. Previously, the New York-based studio applied a similar pattern when it released the collector's edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. Nevertheless, a price nearing US$400 for what is essentially a souvenir package is seen by some observers as a test of the limits of fan loyalty. The collection is scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026, coinciding with the game's launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The contents of the Vice City Collection package are lavish and highly specific. Rockstar has adopted the theme of the fictional Leonida TV show, Macca the Gator. Inside are a 6-inch Macca figure with a secret storage compartment, special-edition Oakley Frogskins with Prizm Sapphire lenses, a New Era 9FORTY snapback cap, a magnetic mirror, and a Leonida Keys crossbody bag. The collection also includes a Chunkee the manatee shot glass, a stirring spoon, a razor-blade keychain, an enamel pin set, vinyl stickers, and a double-sided poster featuring the map of Leonida.
"Pre-order this premium Grand Theft Auto VI collection set, complete with everything you need to have a good time, inspired by the hit Leonida TV show, Macca the Gator, while supplies last," Rockstar Games wrote in its official announcement.
From a business perspective, Rockstar's move reflects the layered monetization strategy that is increasingly common in the AAA games industry. The company is not only relying on game unit sales, but also creating a high-value merchandise ecosystem. For hardcore fans, this collection offers collectibility and prestige. However, for rational consumers, the absence of the game in a package costing millions of rupiah could be a sticking point. Moreover, GTA VI itself has been awaited for more than a decade since GTA V launched in 2013.
In Indonesia, the console game market is indeed not as large as the mobile game market, but the GTA fan base is relatively large. Gaming communities in the country often rely on physical retail stores or marketplaces to obtain collector's editions. At Rp6.4 million, this collection clearly targets the upper-class collector segment, not casual players. Limited purchasing power as well as import duty and tax policies for collectible goods could push the selling price in Indonesia higher than the official price.
In addition, Rockstar's decision not to include the game in the collector's package could spark discussion about pricing ethics. Amid global inflation pressures, several other game publishers actually offer collector's editions that include a copy of the game, even early access. If Rockstar succeeds in selling this collection without the game, it is not impossible that a similar model will be adopted more widely by other publishers. Conversely, if the market response is cold, this could be a signal that fans are starting to recalculate the value of merchandise.
The question now is whether GTA fans in Indonesia will flock to secure this collection for prestige, or instead choose to wait for reviews and prioritize buying just the core game? What is clear is that Rockstar is testing how deep its community's loyalty runsโand how far they are willing to pay just to be part of the world of Vice City.
