The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 will present a new face for regional football: Indonesia has been entrusted to host Group A of the Premier Division, competing against Malaysia, Singapore, and Bangladesh. All group matches are scheduled to take place at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Jakarta, from September 24 to October 5, 2026.
Unlike previous AFF events, this competition is included in the official FIFA calendar. Consequently, every match result will affect the FIFA world ranking of each participant. The inaugural edition will feature 14 nations: 11 AFF members plus three invited teams from Asia, namely Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Hong Kong-China.
Participants are divided into two levels. The Premier Division is the top tier, while the Challenge Division is the second tier. Interestingly, there will be no semifinal round. The winners of Group A and Group B will directly meet in the final match to compete for the Premier Division trophy. Group B itself consists of Vietnam, Pakistan, Thailand, and the Philippines, with matches held at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung.
Meanwhile, the Challenge Division will be centrally held in Hong Kong-China. Group A comprises Hong Kong-China, Laos, and Brunei Darussalam; Group B consists of Cambodia, Myanmar, and Timor-Leste. This format emphasizes that the FIFA ASEAN Cup is not merely a regional tournament but part of FIFA's strategy to expand the reach of competitions in Asia.
From the broadcasting side, PSSI announced Emtek Group as the official broadcaster. The signing ceremony took place at SCTV Tower, Central Jakarta, on September 14, 2026. PSSI Chairman, Erick Thohir, assessed the tournament's audience potential as very large. "From an economic perspective, the total potential viewers are approximately more than 1 billion," he stated. He detailed that around 600 million come from the ASEAN region, plus hundreds of millions from Bangladesh and Pakistan, as well as the Hong Kong area and its surroundings.

For Indonesia, hosting Group A offers a dual advantage. Besides direct fan support at SUGBK, this position strengthens national football diplomacy in the regional arena. The presence of this tournament also has the potential to boost the local economy, especially in Jakarta and Bandung, through a surge in tourist visits and consumption during the match period. On the other hand, the schedule coinciding with the start of the domestic league season could create conflicts of interest for clubs releasing their players to the national team.
