Luke Vickery has finally received his first call-up to strengthen the Indonesian National Team for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. The 20-year-old player admitted he couldn't wait to make his debut with the Garuda Squad in the tournament, which will take place from September 25 to October 5, 2026.
Vickery officially became an Indonesian citizen on July 16, 2026, through a naturalization process. Now, the opportunity to defend the Red and White on the international stage is drawing closer. "This is my first tournament with the Indonesian national team and an experience to feel the excitement with the team. This will be something special for me in front of the fans," he said, as quoted by Bola.com.
Indonesia has been entrusted to host Division 1 of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. The squad is grouped in Group A alongside Malaysia, Singapore, and Bangladesh. All group matches will be held at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Central Jakarta, known for its extraordinary atmosphere.
Vickery's presence adds another option to the Indonesian National Team's attacking line. The player, who operates as a winger, possesses speed and a goal-scoring instinct honed in Australian competitions. Despite being called up for the first time, he doesn't feel burdened. Instead, he sees the support from fans at GBK as additional energy to perform at his best.
"I can't wait. I'm looking forward to the collective support from the fans at GBK to lift the trophy together. Let's make it happen together," Vickery said.
Vickery's naturalization is part of PSSI's strategy to strengthen the squad's depth with young Indonesian-blooded players who play abroad. This step aligns with the long-term program towards the 2030 World Cup qualifiers. However, the biggest challenge will be his quick adaptation to the team's playing style and high public expectations.
For Indonesia, hosting the ASEAN Cup 2026 is more than just a prestigious event. This tournament could be a momentum to elevate the national football ranking in the region while testing the readiness of infrastructure and match management. The presence of players like Vickery is expected to increase competitiveness, especially when facing tough opponents in the group.
On the other hand, the public awaits whether Vickery can translate his excellent performance in the Australian League to the international stage. If successful, he has the potential to become a new mainstay in the attacking line, complementing established names. Healthy competition within the team will spur every player to give their best.
With time still remaining for preparation, the coach and staff will evaluate the best combinations. The opening match of Group A will be an initial test for Vickery and his colleagues. Can Indonesia leverage its host status to win the championship title? The answer will be seen on the green field of SUGBK.
