Veteran British actor David Burke, who played Dr Watson in the series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984–1986), died on May 10, 2025, at the age of 91. His will revealed a total estate of £77,912 (around Rp1.6 billion), left to his wife, actress Anna Calder-Marshall (79), and their only son, actor Tom Burke (45).
According to The Sun, Anna and Tom were named executors of the will. The sad news was first announced by the agency representing Burke, Scott Marshall Partners. The estate is modest for an actor with a career spanning more than five decades, but it reflects Burke's life choice to prioritize family over pursuing high fees in the entertainment industry.
Burke was born in Liverpool on May 25, 1934, and trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He rose to fame for his role as Dr Watson in the Granada Television series starring Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes. However, he turned down an offer to return for the second season because he felt guilty about leaving his wife and young son while filming in Manchester. He made that decision consciously, as quoted in The Times.
“It was my decision. I didn't just want to work; I also wanted to be a father to you. Besides, I was getting tired of saying, ‘Good heavens, Holmes,’” Burke said in an interview with his son.
Tom Burke admitted that as an adult he once felt guilty, thinking his father had missed a big opportunity for his sake. However, David stressed that his choice was a form of responsibility as a parent. Such an attitude is rare in the entertainment industry, which often demands sacrificing time with family.
Besides Sherlock Holmes, Burke starred in a number of popular titles, such as the ITV soap opera Coronation Street, the mystery series Midsomer Murders, the BBC medical drama Casualty, and the period drama The Musketeers. He married Anna in 1971 and they had Tom ten years later. This small family was united in the world of acting, making Burke's legacy not only material but also an artistic footprint.
Burke's passing has left deep sorrow among the Sherlock Holmes fan community. The podcast Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes paid a special tribute, calling Burke a warm and open person. “This is a heavy blow for us. It was an honour to spend time with him a few years ago and to stay in touch. Thank you, David, for everything you gave,” the podcast wrote.
For Indonesian audiences, Burke's Dr Watson may not be as popular as Robert Downey Jr. or Jude Law on the big screen, but for fans of classic BBC series, his performance with Jeremy Brett is considered the most faithful adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's work. The relatively modest estate value also reflects that the British television industry of the 1980s did not provide large royalties like the streaming era does today. Nevertheless, Burke's dedication to family and art remains an example.
In the future, Sherlock Holmes's cultural legacy will continue to live on through various adaptations, including potential Indonesian local productions that often feature detective stories.
