The German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed that the Germany national team will wear a retro version of the 1990 World Cup away jersey in the UEFA Nations League match against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on 24 September. The match will be Jürgen Klopp's debut appearance as head coach, as well as a historic moment because it will be one of Germany's last matches with Adidas after 77 years of partnership.
The decision was announced alongside the naming of two separate squads for four upcoming UEFA Nations League matches. The retro jersey is part of the Bringback collection launched by Adidas ahead of the 2026 World Cup, featuring five iconic designs from Germany's past kits, including the 1990 away strip remembered when Germany won the World Cup in Italy, including the penalty shootout win over England in the semi-final.
For the DFB, this is not merely a product launch. The jersey serves as a symbol of farewell to Adidas, which will end the partnership at the end of this year. As is known, in March 2024 Nike was officially announced as taking over responsibility for supplying the Germany national team's kit at least until 2034. The match against the Netherlands in Berlin on 16 November will be Germany's final appearance in Adidas kit.
Klopp, who has just been introduced as head coach, said the choice of jersey was not merely nostalgia. "We want to honour history, but also look to the future," he said at a press conference. He added that this moment was right to inspire a new generation of players and fans. The statement aligns with the DFB's strategy to remain relevant in the global market, especially ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
From a sports business perspective, the switch to Nike marks a new chapter in the marketing of the Germany national team. Adidas, which is based in Germany, has been part of the team's identity for decades. However, the contract value offered by Nike is said to be far larger, reflecting fierce competition between the two apparel giants. For fans in Indonesia, this retro jersey is likely to be sought after by collectors, given the popularity of German football and its rich history.
"This is the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new one. We thank Adidas for everything," said DFB President Bernd Neuendorf in a separate statement.
On the other hand, the match against the Netherlands will be a tactical test for Klopp. He must prove that he can bring Germany back to competing at the highest level after several inconsistent years. The two squads called up show that Klopp wants to give opportunities to young players while maintaining experience. Indonesian fans who support Germany will certainly hope the Klopp era brings positive change.
Going forward, the question is whether the switch to Nike will affect the visual identity of the Germany national team, which has long been associated with Adidas's distinctive three stripes. Nike is expected to introduce new designs that still respect tradition. Meanwhile, the match on 16 November in Berlin will be an emotional moment for fans who have long associated Germany with Adidas. Will this retro jersey become the most sought-after final collection? Time will tell.
