Josh Widdicombe Reveals Unexpected Path to Strictly Come Dancing Hosting Role

Comedian Josh Widdicombe has revealed he landed the coveted role as a presenter for Strictly Come Dancing through an unconventional method: sending a joking text message to one of the show's producers. The star, known for The Last Leg, will be one of three new hosts for the upcoming season, alongside Emma Willis and dancer Johannes Radebe, replacing Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.

Widdicombe recounted that he had already established a good relationship with Strictly's executive producer, Sarah James, since participating as a contestant in the 2024 Christmas special. Upon hearing the show was looking for replacement presenters, he sent a brief message: "Alright, I'll take the job." However, with no immediate reply, he worried he had misread the situation. The next day, James finally responded, and several months later, Widdicombe was surprised with a serious offer from the production team.

In an interview with The Times, Widdicombe mused, "Did I subconsciously put my name in the ring with that text, which might be the biggest career move I've ever made? I think I'll be discussing that with a therapist for the next 20 years." He also admitted to initial hesitation, having recently moved from London to Exeter with his wife and two children. "We'd just moved from London to Exeter, the kids were happy at their school. Did I really want to uproot my life and do this crazy thing? Of course I did," he stated.

Widdicombe described his meeting with producers in a hotel like a scene from a spy novel, where he needed to prepare a cover story for his first audition. "There had been leaks before and it all felt like being in a John le Carré novel," he said. He believed his initial audition was terrible and was surprised when asked back for a screen test with Emma and Johannes. "I thought I was awful. Everything I said felt fake. I didn't know where to put my hands," he recalled. However, once paired with Emma and Johannes, he felt everything clicked. "From the moment we met, everyone was on the same wavelength, everyone was laughing," he added.

After filming the launch show, Widdicombe grew more confident. "Then we did the launch show and I was like: 'Oh no, we're good at this, this is fun.' I'm confident. I'm not a terrible comedian, I know that. On launch night, the joy in the room was incredible. It's one of the least cynical places I've ever been. I think people focus too much on the weird negativity associated with Strictly, and I just said, 'I'm not going to be part of that,'" he stated.
