Madonna is confirmed to open the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA), marking her first performance on that stage after a 23-year absence. The event, to be held in Los Angeles on September 27, will be hosted by Snoop Dogg, and it is the first time the VMAs have returned to Los Angeles since 2017.
The news comes after Madonna released the album Confessions II last July, which immediately received a warm reception and topped the U.S. Billboard chart. The album's success gave Madonna momentum to return to the event that once produced her iconic moment with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in 2003.
With 11 nominations this year, Madonna has collected 19 VMA awards over the course of her career. Her performance of Like a Virgin at the inaugural VMAs in 1984 is regarded as a pop culture milestone that changed how the industry viewed music performances on television.
In an Instagram post, Madonna said she was surprised and grateful for the positive response to her new album. "I am speechless at how grateful I am for the incredible reception to Confessions on a Dance Floor. Thank you to everyone involved, especially the fans. I am still pinching myself," she wrote. She also said her dream is to make people dance and feel joy.
Earlier, in an interview with Graham Norton on the BBC, Madonna said she had no excessive expectations for the album. "I've been in this industry a long time. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst," she said. She added that the success of the first Confessions album in 2005 was also unexpected, and this time she wants listeners to experience the complete journey of her new album.
For the Indonesian market, Madonna's return to the VMA stage could be an indicator of a resurgence of interest in 1980s and 2000s pop music among younger generations. Streaming platforms and social media make the performance globally accessible, including to fans in Indonesia. This also opens opportunities for domestic music event organizers to bring in similar legendary artists, which could boost tourism and the creative economy.
Looking ahead, the question is whether Madonna's performance at the 2026 VMAs will once again create a viral moment like the controversial 2003 kiss, or instead reaffirm that her appeal now rests on artistic maturity and the musical legacy she has built over four decades.
