Blizzard Entertainment has officially launched the mid-season update for Overwatch 5, bringing a slate of content that goes well beyond a routine patch. The update includes a surprise collaboration with the action game Stellar Blade, a climactic story event in Rialto, the first Mythic skin for Roadhog, and changes to the competitive drives system. The move is seen as Blizzard's effort to sustain player engagement in the second half of the season.
The collaboration, titled Eve Protocol, brings five skins from the Shift Up title. Unlike several previous crossover events that offered free skins through challenges, all skins in this collaboration are available only in the in-game store. The event runs until 17 November, giving players about two weeks to buy the items before the season ends.
Beyond the collaboration, Blizzard introduced the first Mythic skin for Roadhog, a popular tank hero. The Necrotic Knight-themed skin shows Roadhog in silver and toxic-green armor with a beaked mask resembling a plague doctor. The advanced tier of the skin gives red armor with jade accents and a large skull mask. According to industry observers, granting Roadhog a Mythic skin is recognition of the hero's revamp at the start of season 5, which successfully boosted his popularity among players.
The season's main story event, Taking Reign, is the culmination of the Vendetta storyline that peaked the previous week. In this event, Doomfist and Overwatch clash in Rialto. Running for five weeks, the event offers 24 reward tiers divided into a free track and a paid track, mirroring the event model of NetEase's Marvel Rivals. The free track includes a differently colored epic Sigma skin, while the paid track provides a new weapon for Vendetta and a legendary Doomfist skin. The paid track costs 1,000 Overwatch coins, or about $10.
The changes to the competitive drives system let players earn points not only from competitive mode but also from quick play. This gives casual players the flexibility to still earn signature tags without having to compete in competitive mode.
Significant changes also came to the competitive drives system. Where points previously could only be earned from wins in competitive mode, players can now collect points through quick play to obtain legacy weapon points. After reaching the fourth checkpoint, players can choose to wear a particular signature from previous seasons. The move appears aimed at embracing a broader player base, including those reluctant to play the tense competitive mode.
For the Indonesian market, the update remains relevant given the fairly active Overwatch player base in the country, especially among PC and console gamers. Although skin and paid-track prices are in US dollars, Indonesian players can buy them through digital platforms such as Battle.net or local game retail stores. However, it is worth noting that the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar can affect the final price paid.
Looking ahead, the question is how far Blizzard's monetization strategy through skins and paid events will be accepted by the community. With competition from other hero shooters such as Marvel Rivals, which also adopts a similar model, Blizzard needs to ensure that the content on offer is worth the cost players pay. Otherwise, the risk of declining player engagement at the end of the season could become a real threat.
