Nearly two decades after the release of the first World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment is once again offering a play experience that stirs nostalgia through World of Warcraft: Forever. The beta that has just opened shows that this game is not merely a remaster, but an ambitious effort to revive the classic spirit with a modern touch. Its official launch is scheduled for November 4, and fans will likely need to prepare to dive into an updated Azeroth.
In the beta, players can try a new race, the Skyborne elves, who live on Zephras Isle, a floating island. Although it offers a pleasant early experience, some observers feel that the concept of this new race is not well integrated with the existing lore. This highlights the challenge facing Blizzard: how to expand an already iconic world without sacrificing the story consistency built over 20 years. WoW: Forever is set in the same main timeline as classic WoW, so it cannot create contradictions with events that occur afterward.
Even so, once players leave Zephras Isle and explore the real Azeroth, the game's charm is immediately apparent. The classic design that forces players to take their time, manage resources carefully, and interact socially is genuinely brought back. Unlike modern WoW, which is fast-paced and instant, Forever offers a slower but deeper tempo. Players will feel the tension of fighting more than two monsters at once, something that rarely happens in the modern version. This is what makes the game feel both more challenging and more rewarding.
The most striking change lies in the visual aspect. The distinctive original textures and art assets are wrapped in advanced lighting, fog effects, dynamic weather, and stunning water. A real-time 24-hour day-night cycle further strengthens the sense of immersion, making Azeroth one of the most alive game worlds ever created. The developers seem to understand the principle of "the world is the main character" very well, and have succeeded in bringing it back to life in a way that is stunning yet still authentic.
"This is WoW, not as it was, but as it should be."
In addition, the new group-finding system offers a different approach from the instant matchmaking in modern WoW. Players can tag their playstyle as "learning", "relaxed", or "competitive", which encourages communication and cooperation. Although it seems simple, this system succeeds in bringing back a sense of togetherness that had been lost. Players greet each other, chat, and stay flexible in facing dungeon challenges, creating a more meaningful social experience.
For the Indonesian market, the arrival of WoW: Forever could draw the attention of gamers in the country who miss the feel of classic MMOs. Nevertheless, the main challenge remains how Blizzard keeps this game relevant amid competition from fast-paced modern online games. Official gamepad support is also a plus, allowing players with different control preferences to enjoy the game.
Going forward, the WoW: Forever development team faces a heavy task: expanding content without raising the level cap above 60, something that has never been done before. Will they be able to maintain the balance between nostalgia and innovation? Only time will tell, but this beta at least offers a glimmer of hope that Azeroth still has an enduring charm.
