- Shayne Pattynama masuk daftar 19 pemain Persija untuk laga perdana Grup A I League Cup 2026/2027 melawan PSMS Medan.

Shayne Pattynama has finally been included in Persija Jakarta's travelling party for the first Group A match of the 2026/2027 I League Cup against PSMS Medan at Stadion Sumatra Utara, Deli Serdang, on Tuesday (3/11/2026) evening WIB. It is a long-awaited moment after the 28-year-old defender failed to appear at all in eight BRI Super League matches this season.
Persija brought 19 players to Medan, including Shayne. His presence in the squad offers fresh hope for the Macan Kemayoran back line, which has mostly relied on other players. Even so, Shayne's status is not yet fully recovered. Assistant coach Choi In-cheul revealed that the Netherlands-born naturalized player is still going through a fitness-building process.
"We did bring him to this tournament. However, he is currently still in the process of improving his fitness condition. We will look at the situation and how the match develops before deciding whether he gets a chance to play or not," said Choi In-cheul.
The earlier decision not to field Shayne in the BRI Super League had raised questions. He was not injured. Shayne had even played for the Indonesia national team at the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup, held during the international break from late September to early October 2026. That means he was physically available, but may not yet have reached the fitness level the coaching staff wanted.
In addition, the match against PSMS will be a test for Choi In-cheul, who must take over Shin Tae-yong's role. The South Korean coach is reported to be ill and undergoing intensive treatment in hospital. The situation adds complexity for Persija, which must stay solid without its head coach.
In a broader context, the decision regarding Shayne Pattynama highlights the dynamics of the Persija squad under Shin Tae-yong. Since joining early this year, Shayne has not been a first-choice pick. Nevertheless, his experience with the Indonesia national team in international competitions could be an added value if he can reach his best condition. The I League Cup could be the right stage to prove his quality.
The question ahead: will Shayne Pattynama be able to claim a place in Persija's starting eleven, or will he remain a bench warmer? The answer will become clear in the coming matches, starting with the game against PSMS Medan.
