Donald Trump drew attention again after his campaign speech on Monday (2/11) night local time was dominated by discussion of construction projects in Washington DC, rather than the Republican Party's strategy for the midterm elections held the following day. In a speech lasting nearly 20 minutes, the US president did not substantively mention the contest that would determine the composition of Congress for the final two years of his term.
Instead of discussing his party's electability, Trump chose to lay out a number of revitalization projects in the capital, including the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He called the iconic reflecting pool a "work of art" that had previously not functioned optimally and promised to make it operate as it should. He even joked that the pool deserved to be named after him.
This rhetorical choice raised questions about political priorities ahead of the midterms. Several observers assessed that focusing on physical projects could be a strategy to build an image of development in the eyes of voters, but on the other hand it risks being seen as ignoring urgent issues such as inflation, employment, and foreign policy that are more relevant to the public.
In the context of American politics, midterms often serve as a referendum on a president's performance. The ruling party tends to lose seats, and a campaign narrative that does not touch on key issues can widen those losses. Recent surveys show the Democratic Party beginning to gain ground, while the Republican Party faces the challenge of maintaining support in key states.
"This is really a beautiful thing. In many ways this is a work of art, but a work of art that never worked, and now it's going to work," Trump said, as quoted by the Guardian.
For Indonesia, the US political dynamics ahead of the midterms have indirect implications for bilateral relations, especially in trade and investment policy. Political uncertainty in Washington could affect legislative priorities, including trade agreements and climate cooperation that have been a concern of both countries. Indonesian investors with exposure to the US market need to watch the direction of Congress policy after the election.
Going forward, the question is whether the Republican Party can shift the campaign's focus to substantive issues in the remaining hours, or instead get stuck in a development narrative that does not align with voters' needs. The midterm results will be the first test of the effectiveness of Trump's political communication strategy for the rest of his term.
