Manchester United added to their long list of poor results after losing 0-2 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (5/10/2024). The defeat was the Red Devils' ninth consecutive match without a win and placed manager Michael Carrick under intense pressure. However, the spotlight was not only on the team's result but also on the individual performances of players deemed unworthy of wearing the United shirt, especially Mason Mount.
Carrick, who had previously received the club board's backing, again made a controversial decision by starting Carlos Baleba. The Cameroon midfielder lasted only 58 minutes after winning 17% of his ground duels before being replaced by Kobbie Mainoo. A similar decision saw Amad Diallo placed on the right wing, but he failed to create any meaningful chances. Criticism flowed from the fans present in London.
In defense, Lisandro Martinez became the center of attention after receiving a red card in the 63rd minute for a foul on Wesley Fofana. He had earlier been booked for kicking Morgan Rogers. The incident not only hurt the team directly—Chelsea scored their second goal from the penalty spot—but also reflected the poor attitude of the Argentine player. Martinez appeared to ignore Carrick as he left the pitch, adding to the impression of disharmony within the squad.
Mount's failure to perform consistently is nothing new. Since joining from Chelsea, he has suffered 11 different injuries that have left him watching from the sidelines more often than not. Even when fit, his contribution has fallen far short of expectations. Given the enormous fee, United's management will certainly be unable to recoup their investment. Instead of being an equal replacement, Mount has become a financial and tactical burden.
"The decision to bring in Mount for £60 million now looks like one of the worst blunders in the club's transfer history," said a Premier League analyst who declined to be named.
Compared with Martinez, who despite a fatal error still showed quality in several matches, Mount is clearly below standard. Both carry hefty price tags, but Mount has never truly delivered a positive impact. His poor performance against Chelsea is the latest evidence that he may no longer have a future at Old Trafford.
The crisis at Manchester United is not just about results on the pitch. A lack of leadership from the board, failures in the transfer market, and weak player mentality are the root causes. Fans are demanding major change, from the manager's seat to the squad composition. However, with Mount's contract still running and his resale value plummeting, corrective steps will not be easy.
Going forward, Carrick is required to quickly find the right formula to revive the team. If not, his position could soon be under threat. Meanwhile, Mount must prove he is still worthy of trust, or else become a symbol of the failure of United's new era. Will the management dare to take decisive action, or will they continue to sink into a cycle of mediocrity?
