Sony has once again expanded its professional audio device line with the launch of the ECM-AX10, a compact USB-C microphone claimed to be the world's first with Eclipsa Audio certification for phones. The device is designed specifically for vloggers, mobile filmmakers, and content creators who need immersive audio recording without heavy equipment. This move marks a new chapter in spatial audio production that is becoming increasingly accessible.
The ECM-AX10 relies on four omnidirectional capsules capable of recording in Ambisonics, binaural, and stereo formats. This flexibility allows users to capture the sense of space, direction, and distance according to project needs—from travel videos, festival atmospheres, sports cheers, to gadget reviews. Its Ambisonics capability reaches 48 kHz/32-bit float, which when combined with the Sony Spatial Audio Video Tool can produce a full-sphere Eclipsa Audio experience on YouTube based on the open IAMF (Immersive Audio Model and Format) standard.
In addition, a two-channel binaural mode at 48 kHz/16-, 24-, or 32-bit quality can be converted to 360 Reality Audio for 3D rendering optimized for headphones. Meanwhile, stereo mode remains compatible with common recording and video apps, as well as various social media platforms. This makes the ECM-AX10 a bridge between professional audio production and everyday consumption.
In terms of design, the ECM-AX10 brings a number of smart features that make things easier for creators in the field. Selfie Mode allows the microphone to adjust its capture direction for both the front and rear cameras of a phone. The attenuator (ATT) button reduces sensitivity by up to -20dBFS to avoid overloading when recording loud sound sources, complemented by an additional Noise Cut control. Not only that, a three-axis gyroscope and accelerometer ensure audio stays aligned with video orientation, so recordings remain consistent even when the camera rotates or moves dynamically.
For monitoring, there is a 3.5mm mini jack that allows the use of IEMs such as the Sony IER-M500 or other models. The retail package includes a windscreen, spacer sheet, shoe-mount microphone holder (cold shoe without electrical contacts), and a USB-C extension cable. All of this is packed into a tiny 24-gram body, making it a portable solution for mobile creators.
“With the ECM-AX10, you don't have to risk a $15,000 microphone like the C-800G to capture expressive and immersive ambience,” Sony claimed in its press release.
The presence of the ECM-AX10 has the potential to change the landscape of audio content production in Indonesia. With more local creators producing vertical videos for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, the need for high-quality yet affordable audio is increasingly urgent. This microphone offers a shortcut to producing spatial audio without having to own expensive studio equipment. In addition, support for the IAMF and Eclipsa Audio standards opens opportunities for local streaming platforms to adopt immersive audio formats, which in turn can improve the viewing experience for Indonesian audiences.
Nevertheless, adoption of this technology still depends on ecosystem readiness. Will platforms like YouTube and other social media in Indonesia soon fully support Eclipsa Audio? What about device availability in the local market and its price? Sony has not announced an official price for Indonesia, but if their strategy is consistent with previous products, the ECM-AX10 could become a must-have tool for creators who want to compete at the global level. In the long term, this microphone is not just an accessory, but a gateway to a more democratic era of immersive audio.
