MartinLogan has officially introduced the USR51, a 5.1-channel AV receiver (AVR) that challenges the design conventions of home audio gear. Instead of relying on a large chassis like most AVRs, the USR51 comes in an ultra-thin body that can be mounted behind a TV panel, tucked into a wall media box, or slipped into a shallow cabinet. The move addresses a long-standing complaint from home theater users who struggle to find space for bulky audio equipment.
Developed together with Anthem, the USR51 brings digital processing and the ARC Genesis room correction platform typically found only in high-end AV gear. According to Allan Tarrant, Senior Vice President at MartinLogan, nearly every AV component has shrunk over the years, from screens to speakers. AV receivers, however, have lagged behind the miniaturization trend. "Our goal with the USR51 was to deliver an AVR that is easy to hide behind the TV, so the question of where to place the device becomes simple," he said.
Despite its tiny size, the USR51 does not sacrifice power. Its five amplification channels are claimed to deliver 50 watts per channel into 8 ohms, or 92 watts per channel into 4 ohms. That output is enough to drive a wide range of speaker systems without an additional amplifier. The ARC Genesis feature lets users measure room acoustics and automatically adjust the system's response, similar to what is found in larger Anthem products.
On the connectivity side, the USR51 supports Apple AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, and Bluetooth. Because the device is likely to be hidden from view, MartinLogan emphasizes flexible control options. The USR51 is compatible with IP and IR control, ships with an IR remote, and can be controlled via the Anthem Remote app on iOS and Android. It can also be integrated with home automation systems such as Savant, Control4, URC, Crestron, RTI, Elan, AVA, and Josh.ai.
Installation is made as easy as possible. Tool-free Phoenix speaker terminals simplify wiring in tight spaces. A mounting bracket is included to attach the unit directly to a TV using the standard VESA pattern, or into a wall media box. With an optional rack kit, the USR51 takes up only 1U of space. An IR repeater and the remote app ensure control still works even when the device is completely out of sight.
The USR51 relies on HDMI eARC, optical, or analog input to the TV. The absence of a row of HDMI inputs like conventional AVRs is a design consequence: MartinLogan targets installations where the TV or an external streaming device handles the video side, while the receiver focuses on audio. Setup is no longer done through an on-screen TV menu, but through a web interface or app. Volume information can still be displayed on screen during use.
"The growing popularity of low-profile speaker systems is driving the need for more compact amplification," said Andrew Lindsey, Product Manager at MartinLogan. "The USR51 eliminates the need for deep furniture or remote device placement. Just mount the USR51 and the streaming device behind the TV, and most listeners' needs are met."
Lindsey added that system complexity is often a source of trouble for users. The USR51, he said, solves that with compatibility with leading control platforms and the simplicity of eARC. "Because the design is tiny, there is no room for many HDMI inputs, so eARC enables a high-performance audio experience in an ultra-thin chassis," he explained.
MartinLogan positions the USR51 as a natural match for its low-profile and architectural speaker lines, including the Motion SLM Series, Motion Compact Series 2i, 4i, 6i, 8i, Motion Discrete Cinema Series, and the entire architectural speaker range. The device will be available through authorized MartinLogan dealers and integrators worldwide starting October 2026.
For the Indonesian market, the USR51 could appeal to urban consumers living in apartments or homes with limited space. However, the US$1,299.99 price (around Rp20 million) places it in the premium segment, and official availability in the country has yet to be confirmed. Local integrators may have to wait until the end of 2026 to offer this solution. The question is whether the Indonesian market is ready for an AVR that sacrifices HDMI input flexibility for ease of placement. Time will tell, but the miniaturization trend in audio gear seems increasingly hard to hold back.
