Jennifer Hudson revealed that her romantic relationship with rapper Common is going very harmoniously, but she stressed she feels no pressure to take the next step toward marriage. Hudson describes the couple, who have been together since 2022, as someone who supports her in many aspects, both personally and professionally.
In an interview on Today with Jenna and Sheinelle, Hudson called their relationship something "divine". She said she is happy to have a partner she can discuss many things with and who is always ready to help. "To have someone that you can depend on on so many levels, and then to have the support, it's amazing," she said. Hudson even recounted how she asked Common to perform at Madison Square Garden to sing "Glory", which she loves.
Although their relationship appears affectionate, Hudson stressed that marriage is not the main goal. She said she has never been the type of woman who feels she must marry soon. "I think that's a stigma that's put on women. Like we all just want to be married. I was never that girl. So no, I'm not that type," she said. However, she did not close the door entirely. "If it comes, it'll come when you want it or if you want it," she added.
Common himself recently praised Hudson in an interview with People. He called Hudson someone who brings joy and light to others. "We talk about spirit and heart. She embodies that at the highest level. She cares about other people, cares about God, cares about her family. She's a woman who has a light, and we all know she's been through a lot. Some of the hardest things a human can go through, yet she still has that light. She still brings joy," Common said.
Hudson was previously married to James Payton from 1999 to 2007. Last year, she joked that Common could be "a little bossy" when they work together. On Late Night with Seth Meyers, Hudson said, "He's a little bossy in terms of being Common. Common and Rashid are two different people musically, but he's a genius at music, so it's an honor to work with him, for him, and with him, both on his album and my album."
Hudson's decision not to rush into marriage reflects a shift in views among modern women, especially those with established careers. Marriage is no longer the only measure of happiness or success. Hudson, who has built a career as a singer, actress, and talk show host, seems to prefer focusing on the happiness and balance she feels today.
In Indonesia, a similar phenomenon is beginning to emerge. Many career women choose not to marry young or even not to marry at all, though they remain open to serious relationships. The stigma that women must marry is still strong, but it is slowly eroding as women's education and economic independence increase. Hudson's story can be a mirror that happiness is not always identical to marital status.
Going forward, the public may still wait to see whether Hudson and Common will go further. But for Hudson, what matters most is having a healthy, mutually supportive relationship. Will marriage be part of their journey, or will they continue as they are? What is clear is that Hudson has shown that women have the right to determine their own path in life, without pressure from social expectations.
