Sky Sports Formula 1 expert Naomi Schiff has warned that repeated disruptions to Mercedes' power unit could cost Kimi Antonelli in this season's world championship battle. The concern arose after George Russell suffered a technical failure at the Bahrain race at the Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia, last weekend.
The incident cost Russell a chance to finish on the podium and widened the points gap to Antonelli to 84. The Italian driver now leads the standings with 320 points, while Russell is stuck in second with 236 points. Schiff believes the problem is not merely one driver's bad luck, but an indication of a systemic issue with the Mercedes engine that customer teams also use.
In his analysis on the Sky Sports F1 Show, Schiff highlighted that the failure that struck Russell was not an isolated case. "It's not a good thing. It has happened many times, not just on George's car. Kimi has also had some problems," he said. He added that other teams using the Mercedes power unit were also affected, raising broader concerns within Mercedes management, including Toto Wolff.
"You have to scratch your head and wonder why they have so many reliability problems across the board. It could cost Kimi a few more wins. It could also cost the team a lot of constructors' points," Schiff said.
Schiff believes that if the problem is not addressed soon, Antonelli's ambition to win his first world championship could unravel. He also noted that rival teams such as Red Bull could exploit the situation to close the points gap. "You look at Red Bull this weekend, Isack Hadjar was very close to Max Verstappen until the race started, but other teams and drivers will take points from Mercedes," he added.
Even so, Schiff did not entirely absolve Russell of responsibility. In his view, the British driver should be faster than his teammate, especially in a season seen as his year after Mercedes finally gave him a competitive car. "I feel for George. I don't want to give him an excuse, because his job is to be faster than his teammate. But in a year that should be his, I think he has lost a bit of momentum," he said.
For Formula 1 fans in Indonesia, the dynamics at Mercedes make for compelling viewing ahead of the coming rounds. The technical failures that struck Russell and the potential problems with Antonelli's car could open opportunities for other drivers to compete at the front. Moreover, this season has been marked by tight competition among the top teams, making every point highly valuable.
The question now is how quickly Mercedes can fix the reliability of their power unit. If it is not addressed soon, it is not impossible that the world title that is already within Antonelli's reach could slip away along the way.
