A total of 11,261 joint personnel were deployed to secure a demonstration held by the Koalisi Besar Perjuangan Buruh Indonesia in front of the DPR/MPR Building on Tuesday (6/10). The action is estimated to draw around 6,000 protesters, making it one of the largest labor rallies held in the Senayan area in recent times.
The Head of the Penmas Sub-Directorate of Bidhumas at Polda Metro Jaya, AKBP Onkoseno Grandiarso Sukahar, detailed that the security personnel come from Polda Metro Jaya, the TNI, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, and the DPR's internal security. They will be stationed not only around the parliamentary complex but also in buffer areas and along the protesters' movement routes.
The deployment of such a large number of personnel shows that the police are taking potential escalation into account, even though they officially emphasize a persuasive approach. Besides securing the labor action, officers are also on standby to secure various other public activities in Jakarta on the same day. This means the security burden is not concentrated at a single point but spread across several strategic locations.
"All personnel serving in this expression-of-opinion event are also prohibited from carrying firearms, sharp weapons, or similar objects, and must maintain a humane attitude," Onkoseno said.
The ban on officers carrying firearms and sharp weapons is an important marker that the police are seeking to avoid physical friction with protesters. This instruction also affirms that personnel must not act beyond their orders or authority. In a democratic context, humane security is key to ensuring that the expression of aspirations does not turn into conflict.
On the traffic side, the police have prepared traffic-flow engineering to anticipate congestion. However, adjustments will be made situationally, depending on conditions on the ground. People intending to pass around the DPR/MPR area are asked to follow the latest traffic information and comply with officers' directions. The social media channels of Polda Metro Jaya and TMC Polda Metro Jaya can serve as references for information updates.
The police also urged protesters to convey their aspirations in an orderly manner, protect public facilities, and not be easily provoked. This appeal aligns with the principle that the right to express opinions in public is protected, but must still respect other public interests. The balance between freedom of expression and public order is a challenge that must be managed together.
In his closing statement, Onkoseno emphasized that Polda Metro Jaya respects the public's right to express opinions. The police are present to provide services so that aspirations are conveyed safely and orderly, while also keeping other residents' activities running smoothly. This statement underscores the police's role as a facilitator, not an obstacle, in the democratic process.
Going forward, public attention will focus on how the action unfolds and whether the labor demands receive a response from the DPR. If the action proceeds peacefully, this momentum could become a positive precedent for dialogue between the government, the legislature, and trade unions. Conversely, if tensions arise, questions about the effectiveness of persuasive security will resurface. Either way, today is a test of all parties' commitment to an orderly and dignified democracy.
