New York officially opened the door to online sports betting on January 8, 2022, a move that changed the landscape of the gambling industry in the state. The decision came after the United States Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018, giving states the freedom to regulate sports betting practices themselves. Now, nine licensed apps operate in New York, including big names such as DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, BetRivers, and Fanatics Sportsbook.
This change is not merely an expansion of access for sports fans. The state government sees it as a significant new source of revenue. Data shows that sports betting accounts for about one-fifth of New York's total gambling revenue, competing with casinos, horse racing, and the lottery. Around 80 percent of that revenue is allocated to public education, while the remaining 20 percent goes to local youth sports programs as well as gambling education and treatment.
Although relatively liberal in licensing, New York imposes a number of restrictions not found in all states. Users cannot place bets on matches involving New York college teams such as Syracuse, St. John's, or Army, even if those matches are held outside the state. The ban also applies to college sporting events taking place in New York territory, even if the competing teams come from elsewhere. In addition, betting markets for individual awards such as NFL MVP or NBA Rookie of the Year are not available.
For New York residents, local sports teams are the main draw. The Yankees and Mets in baseball offer daily markets thanks to 162 games per season, with in-game betting options. The Giants and Jets in the NFL provide seasonal markets as well as player-based bets such as Malik Nabers and Garrett Wilson. The Knicks, who just won their first NBA title since 1973, are favorites for the 2026-2027 season with Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns as their backbone. Meanwhile, the Nets are relying on Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. to rebuild their performance.
In the NHL, the Rangers and Islanders have a long history that draws bettors' interest. The Bills in the NFL, powered by Josh Allen, are back as a force after a solid 2026 season. The Sabres, despite never having won the Stanley Cup, managed to win their division and return to the playoffs after 15 years. Each of these teams has an official partnership with a particular betting platform, such as Caesars with the Knicks and Rangers, BetMGM with the Jets, and FanDuel with the Yankees and Sabres.
"The sports betting market in New York is not only about revenue, but also about how the state manages the social risks that come with it," said a gambling industry analyst who did not wish to be named.
New York's approach to sports betting reflects a balance between economic expansion and social responsibility. With 80 percent of revenue allocated to education, the state seeks to ensure that the fiscal benefits of the industry are felt directly by the public. However, challenges remain, especially in dealing with gambling addiction. New York provides a helpline through HOPENY that can be reached by phone or text message, as a commitment to responsible gambling practices.
For Indonesia, developments in New York could serve as a mirror of how strict but measured sports betting regulation can create an economically beneficial ecosystem without ignoring social protection aspects. Although the legal and cultural context in Indonesia is different, the principles of revenue transparency and allocation for the public interest are relevant lessons.
Going forward, the big question is whether the New York model will be adopted by other states, or instead become an example of how strict regulation can limit market growth. With nine competing apps and a large sports fan base, New York seems set to remain a barometer for the sports betting industry in the United States.
