The gaming industry has received another jolt of energy from the Star Wars universe. Star Wars: Galactic Racer, the latest science-fiction racing title developed for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X|S, is scheduled to launch on October 6. The game promises an interplanetary racing experience that relies not only on speed but also on the courage to take extreme risks on the track.
Unlike most Star Wars adaptations that dwell on Jedi-Sith conflict or the Skywalker saga, Galactic Racer takes a wilder path: the intergalactic underground racing world. Players take on the role of Shade, a mysterious masked racer with ambitions to dominate the Galactic Racing League. Throughout his career, Shade faces a host of eccentric rivals, including Biddi Blas, a snouted alien fond of hurling insults and betting challenges before races begin.
This narrative choice is seen as a smart move. The Star Wars universe has long been known for its rich array of unique fringe characters, yet they are rarely explored seriously in the game medium. By elevating the racing subculture, Galactic Racer could fill a gap that has not been touched much, similar to the approach that made the first season of The Mandalorian feel fresh.
On the mechanical side, Galactic Racer blends the intensity of The Phantom Menace-style podracing with technical gameplay in the vein of F-Zero. Players can choose three vehicle classes with different characteristics: the landspeeder, nimble in corners but average in speed; the speeder bike, with high top speed but losing momentum when turning; and the skim speeder, which demands momentum management and is hard to control in sharp turns.
The most prominent feature is the Ramjet, an additional afterburner system that provides a massive boost with fatal consequences. The Ramjet gauge is split into two sections, with a "redline" zone at the top capable of producing a bigger boost. However, if players push the vehicle past the limit, the racer will simply explode. This risk-reward mechanism pushes players to play aggressively without losing control.
"Every time I activate the Ramjet, it feels like a scene from the film โ pulling the lever and shooting forward. The great controller vibration makes the experience feel very tactile," the reviewer said in the original article.
Beyond the racing mechanics, a roguelike-style campaign mode offers wide variation. Each racing tour can play out differently, with mission choices such as standard races, elimination matches, and engine prototype trials. Between races, players can explore small zones to hear random conversations, buy vehicle upgrades with credits, and accept sponsorship offers from crime bosses in exchange for certain terms.
An interesting surprise comes from the return of Sebulba, the legendary podracer from The Phantom Menace. After being defeated in a one-on-one duel, Sebulba becomes a reluctant mentor. He shares stories of podracing's glory days, which are then visualized as playable podracing segments. This touch adds a narrative dimension while enriching the game's variety.
Each planet in the game has unique characteristics that affect how races unfold. Crait kicks up red dust clouds that obscure vision and slow down opponents. The frozen Ando Prime can disrupt steering systems as vehicle joints fill with ice, though afterburner temperatures become more stable. The toxic Sentinel 1 reduces vehicle durability and can disable the Ramjet if exposed to acid pools. Such details reinforce the impression that every track has its own challenges.
Even so, the multiplayer experience remains the main draw. Racing against other players delivers fast-changing dynamics, where a leading position can vanish in an instant. However, the single-player mode is no less engaging, especially because it successfully builds a rarely touched Star Wars underworld.
For the Indonesian market, the arrival of Galactic Racer adds to the long list of racing games ready to enliven console and PC platforms. With a large Star Wars fan base in the country, the title has the potential to draw the attention of casual and hardcore gamers alike. Regional pricing and availability are still awaiting an official announcement from the publisher, but enthusiasm for the Star Wars franchise in the local gaming community is generally quite high.
The question now is whether Galactic Racer can sustain momentum after launch. With challenging mechanics and a strong narrative, the game has a chance to become one of the most memorable racing releases of the year. However, competition in the arcade racing genre is tight, and community reception will largely determine whether Galactic Racer becomes a classic or merely another entry in the long list of Star Wars games.
