WBA Accused of Rule Breach, Gassiev Demands Super Champion Rights

Murat Gassiev, the WBA regular heavyweight champion, through his promoter team lodged a strong protest against reports that the Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua bout on 11 December will be for the WBA Super belt. Gassiev stressed that the status should belong to him as the reigning champion.
Gassiev currently holds the WBA regular heavyweight title he won and defended in the ring. After Oleksandr Usyk decided to vacate his title, Gassiev's team argued that Gassiev as reigning champion should be promoted to Super Champion, or at least given the first opportunity to contest that status before it is granted to another boxer.
According to an official statement received by the newsroom, Gassiev's promoter considers it unacceptable that a report of this magnitude circulated without consultation with his side. They demanded immediate clarification from the WBA.
"If anyone should be fighting for the WBA Super heavyweight title, it is Murat Gassiev, the reigning champion, not two boxers who currently hold no world title. Allowing the number two and number three contenders to leapfrog the number one contender and the reigning champion is an extraordinary decision and, to our knowledge, unprecedented. We have officially asked the WBA to confirm or deny this report and to provide reasons for the decision. At the very least, Murat must be given the opportunity to be heard and to fight for Super Champion status before it is granted to anyone else. We fully defend our client's rights in this matter," said John Wirt, co-promoter and legal adviser to Gassiev.
Gassiev himself stressed that the decision was made without any contact with him or his team. "No one asked me or my team before this decision. I have defended this title in the ring, not in a press release. I am ready to fight anyone – Fury, Joshua, anyone – tomorrow, next month, anytime. That has never been a question for me. I will not accept a situation where a champion's future is decided on paper, not in the ring," he said.
The case highlights a potential conflict of interest within the body of the world boxing organization. The WBA, as one of the major sanctioning bodies in world boxing, has the authority to determine title status, but a decision perceived as non-transparent can damage credibility. If the WBA grants Gassiev's request, the Fury vs Joshua bout could lose its Super status, which would certainly affect its commercial value and appeal to global audiences.
For Indonesia, this dynamic could be a valuable lesson. The national boxing industry is growing, with the emergence of talented boxers at world level, and it needs clear and consistent regulation from international boxing bodies. Uncertainty over title status can affect sponsor and investor interest, as well as reduce public trust in sportsmanship. In addition, if the WBA is seen as unfair, pressure could emerge for national boxing associations to become more vocal in demanding governance reform.
As of this news being published, the WBA has not given an official response. However, pressure from Gassiev's team is predicted to continue. If the WBA sticks to its decision, it is not impossible that Gassiev will take legal action or even boycott the fight. Conversely, if the WBA backs down, the Fury vs Joshua bout must seek other legitimacy. Either way, the boxing public awaits clarity: will the WBA put rules or commercialism first?
