Avengers: Endgame Encore officially returns to cinema screens starting 25 September 2026, bringing audiences back to the climactic battle against Thanos. But this version is not just a cinematic reunion. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo revealed that Marvel Studios has a bigger mission in mind: bridging the story toward Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on 18 December 2026.
During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, the Russo brothers said the re-release offers two things that cannot be had from watching at home. First, the collective experience in a cinemaโthe cheers, the applause, and the euphoria shared with hundreds of other viewers. Second, the presence of new clips that explicitly show the thread connecting Endgame and Doomsday. "There is a very strong connection between Endgame and Doomsday," Joe Russo said, as quoted from the panel.
Marvel's decision to repackage Endgame is not without calculation. Since 2019, the entertainment industry landscape has changed drastically. The pandemic accelerated the migration of audiences to streaming platforms, while the production costs of superhero films soared. By re-releasing Endgame in cinemas, Marvel is not only testing how strong fan loyalty is, but also creating a chain-marketing momentum ahead of its next two giant projects: Doomsday and Secret Wars, scheduled for release on 17 December 2027.
For Indonesian audiences, this phenomenon is more than just a spectacle. The national cinema industry is still in a post-pandemic recovery phase, and the arrival of a big title like Endgame Encore could be a catalyst for raising occupancy. According to data from the Indonesian Cinema Managers Association, attendance in the third quarter of 2026 has not fully returned to 2019 levels. This re-release has the potential to fill that gap, especially in major cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bandung.
On the other hand, this re-release is also a test for Marvel's strategy of maintaining relevance amid the superhero fatigue that some viewers are beginning to feel. Some fans on social media complained that Endgame Encore feels like a commercial attempt to squeeze nostalgia. However, the Russo brothers argued that the new clips embedded in it provide significant added value. "If you watch the movie in the cinema, you will see some new clips that depict that connection," Joe Russo explained.
"I think that's very important. If you want to relive the experience of watching it with a lot of people, in front of a live audience, with everyone cheering, clapping, and supporting their favorite moments. That's one of the reasons." โ Joe Russo
The question now is whether Indonesian audiences will flock back to cinemas to rewatch a film they already saw seven years ago. The answer will not only determine the success of Endgame Encore, but also signal to Marvel how strong their fan base is in the Southeast Asian market ahead of Doomsday. If enthusiasm runs high, it is not impossible that the re-release model with added exclusive content will become a new trend in the global film industry.
