Apple Prepares Screenless Fitness Tracker and AI Pendant, Tim Cook Steps In

Apple Inc. is reportedly working on new wearable devices that are far different from the Apple Watch: a screenless fitness tracker and an artificial intelligence-based pendant. The information was first revealed by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who said prototypes already exist, though there is no certainty the products will go into mass production.
According to Gurman, the fitness tracker will resemble a Whoop band, with a fabric strap and sensors that monitor heart rate and several other health indicators. Notably, former Apple CEO who now serves as chairman, Tim Cook, along with services chief Eddy Cue, are said to have given full support to the project. The backing from the two senior figures signals that the initiative is not merely a small experiment in the wearable division.
However, Gurman warned that if Apple does proceed with production, the device is unlikely to arrive before 2028. That means there is still room for competitors to cement their position in the screenless fitness tracker segment, which is currently dominated by Whoop and, in part, Oura Ring.
Besides the fitness tracker, Apple is also said to be developing a camera-equipped AI pendant. The device is designed to be worn around the neck, attached to clothing, or placed on another part of the body, with the ability to collect visual data for processing by Siri. Gurman stated that the pendant's development was delayed, but if realized, it could become a significant source of visual input for Apple's digital assistant.
"Tim Cook and Eddy Cue are giving full support to this product," Gurman wrote in his post on X, referring to the screenless fitness tracker.
Apple's move cannot be separated from competitive pressure in the wearable market. The latest generation of Apple Watch has already added features that were previously competitors' strengths, such as readiness scores and biological age estimates. Expansion into screenless devices and AI wearables is Apple's effort to stay relevant in an increasingly crowded segment.
For the Indonesian market, Apple's plan deserves close attention. Indonesia is one of the fast-growing wearable markets, with brands such as Xiaomi, Huawei, and Samsung dominating the mid-to-lower price segment. The arrival of an Apple fitness tracker that is likely to be priced at a premium could widen the gap between the upper and lower segments, while also pushing local and Chinese brands to accelerate innovation. In addition, if the AI pendant does arrive, the issue of visual data privacy will become a heated debate, especially in a country with still-developing data protection regulations like Indonesia.
Apple has not given an official comment on the report. However, the leaked development direction shows that the company does not want to rely on a single device. Wearable diversification is a long-term strategy to lock users into its health and AI services ecosystem.
The question is, can Apple execute these two ambitious projects on time, or will it lose momentum in an increasingly dynamic market? In the next few years, we will see whether the bet on screenless devices and AI wearables becomes a new breakthrough or merely a failed experiment.
