Microsoft officially announced the retirement of three Microsoft 365 companion apps—Calendar, People, and Files—that had been integrated with the Windows 11 taskbar. The apps will stop working on or before December 16, 2026, marking the end of one of Microsoft's efforts to bring quick access to user information directly from the desktop.
The decision is surprising because the three apps were only launched last year. At the time, Microsoft aggressively promoted the apps' ability to boost productivity by providing instant access to calendars, contacts, and files through Microsoft Graph. However, in its latest announcement, Microsoft's language changed drastically: the apps are now described merely as an "additional way" to find information that can actually be accessed through other services.
The shift in narrative implies that the experiment did not meet adoption targets or was deemed redundant with existing features. Microsoft recommends users switch to a combination of Outlook, Teams, Windows Search, File Explorer, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Office apps such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The company stressed that removing the apps will not delete or affect existing Microsoft 365 data.
For users in Indonesia, especially professionals and businesspeople who rely on the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, this step requires adjusting habits. Until now, the companion apps made it easy to quickly access meeting schedules or important files without opening the full applications. Going forward, users will need to rely on Windows Search or open Outlook and Teams directly. Although no data will be lost, the transition could disrupt workflows if not anticipated.
"The companion apps are an additional way to find calendar, people, and file information. Removing them does not delete or affect existing Microsoft 365 capabilities or data," Microsoft said in an official statement, as quoted from the company's announcement.
Microsoft's decision can also be seen as a reflection of software industry dynamics increasingly moving toward cloud- and AI-based integration. Rather than maintaining separate apps, Microsoft appears to want to push users to adopt Copilot and other smart features embedded in its main applications. This step aligns with the company's strategy of aggressively promoting artificial intelligence as the backbone of future productivity.
On the other hand, technology observers assess that closing the companion apps could signal that Microsoft is consolidating its product portfolio. Resources can therefore be redirected to developing more strategic features, such as improving collaboration capabilities in Teams or AI integration across the Microsoft 365 line. However, the risk of losing users accustomed to the old workflow remains, especially among loyal Windows users.
For the Indonesian market, this decision also opens opportunities for competitors such as Google Workspace, which offers similar integration through web and mobile apps. Local companies looking to switch to alternatives may reconsider their dependence on the Microsoft ecosystem. Nevertheless, Microsoft's dominance in the corporate segment remains strong, so the impact may be limited to individual users or small businesses.
Going forward, the question is whether Microsoft will launch a more innovative replacement solution, or instead rely on existing features. Users are advised to start getting used to the new interface and take advantage of more advanced search features. Meanwhile, analysts will continue to watch whether this step is part of a larger long-term strategy or merely a correction to a less successful experiment.
