A 22-year-old Magic: The Gathering card, Words of Worship, has suddenly become one of the hottest commodities on the secondary market. The price of the rare card from the Onslaught set (2002) shot up from just a few dollars to more than $31 in less than a week, sparking a hunt among collectors and Commander players.
Data from MTGStocks shows a dramatic spike: on September 22, the price of Words of Worship broke through $19.95—up more than 330% in a day—before surging again to $31.06 on September 23. Previously, the card sold for only about $2.08 in near-mint condition on TCGplayer on September 8, and $7.69 on September 19. The increase is extreme for a card that has almost never touched the Commander staple list.
The main trigger is Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel, one of the commanders from the Multiverse Reforged deck in the Reality Fracture set. This six-mana Spirit Dragon lets players pay life whenever they gain life to draw that many cards. The combination with Words of Worship—which can turn one draw into gaining five life—creates an efficient card advantage engine: one mana can turn into five cards.
The interaction becomes even more vicious when Skirge Familiar is in play. Because Words of Worship can be activated in response to Niv-Mizzet's draw resolution, players can repeat the process: turn the draw into life, trigger Niv-Mizzet again, then discard the extra cards for black mana, and activate Words of Worship again. As a result, the deck can mill the entire library while continuing to generate cards.
"An ancient white card with an activated ability that looks bad can become a star overnight—at least as a key part of a modern Commander combo," an analyst wrote in a market report.
This phenomenon is not the first to happen in the Magic ecosystem. Previously, Kasmina, Enigma Sage was also sought after once players discovered a deadly combo from the Reality Fracture set. Something similar happened with Sphinx of the Chimes, which drew attention again thanks to the card Sphinx's Approach. This pattern shows that new sets often lift old cards that were previously ignored.
For the Indonesian market, a price spike in cards like Words of Worship could affect the local community. Card shops and collectors in Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bandung may see rising demand for old cards from the Onslaught set, especially those with synergy with new commanders. However, with limited supply and import costs, prices on the domestic market could be higher than international prices. Players who want to build a Commander deck based on this combo need to consider the extra cost and card availability.
Looking ahead, will the price of Words of Worship hold at its current level or fall back? History shows that Magic card price spikes are often temporary, especially if the combo does not prove dominant in tournaments.
