Roy Suryo at Diploma Trial: Nothing Was Wrong, Jokowi Brought Himself Down

Roy Suryo, the defendant in the case over the alleged fake diploma of Indonesia's 7th President Joko Widodo, believes the protracted controversy over the authenticity of the head of state's diploma stems from Jokowi's own attitude, which he considers to have been opaque from the start. He made the statement on CNN Indonesia's Head to Head program, titled “Sidang Ijazah Bergulir, Kapan Jokowi Hadir?”, on Wednesday (23/9).
According to Roy, no other party should be blamed in this case. “Nothing was wrong, he brought himself down,” he said in response to a question from Lechumanan, Deputy Chair of DPN Peradi Bersatu, who appeared as the complainant witness. Lechumanan had earlier questioned the prosecutors' basis for accusing Roy of having caused Jokowi to be “brought down as low as possible”.
In the indictment, prosecutors said Roy's actions caused immaterial losses for Jokowi in the form of a tarnished reputation and feelings of being insulted and demeaned. Roy rejected that legal construction. He argued that if Jokowi had shown his diploma to the public from the start, the controversy would not have spread. “If Jokowi had shown his diploma to the public from the start, ‘oh’, no need to copy Barack Obama, just copy Arsul Sani. Yes, when asked, show your diplomas to the public. It would be over, nothing,” he said.
Roy made the statement even though the police had previously shown the diploma in question. In a special case presentation on 15 December 2025, Polda Metro Jaya disclosed that the diploma was issued by the Faculty of Forestry at Universitas Gadjah Mada and had been seized from Jokowi's side as the complainant. However, Roy maintained his position. “It's fake! Where is it, show it?” he said at the time. He even highlighted the condition of the photo in the diploma, which he considered odd. “Where is there a photo of someone over 40 years old, that clearly looks like a photo just printed yesterday with a printer,” Roy said.

The case is still rolling at the East Jakarta District Court. A follow-up hearing was held on Thursday (24/9) after Roy refused a restorative justice settlement at the first hearing the previous week. Meanwhile, dr Tifa on Thursday (17/9) underwent an exception hearing to submit objections to the prosecutors' indictment. She is charged with defamation, violations related to electronic information, and damaging Jokowi's personal reputation over the fake diploma allegation.
This case is a test for law enforcement in Indonesia's digital space. On one hand, the state seeks to protect individual reputation from cyber attacks; on the other, the public demands transparency from officials on important documents. The tension between freedom of expression and reputation protection will remain in the spotlight, especially ahead of the court's ruling. The question is, will Jokowi appear in court to give testimony, or will this controversy keep spinning without a clear resolution?
