Microsoft Updates Surface Pro 12 and Laptop 13 with Snapdragon X2 Plus Chip, Prices Rise Due to RAM Shortage

Microsoft has officially introduced updates to its compact PC line, the 12-inch Surface Pro and Surface Laptop 13, now powered by the Snapdragon X2 Plus chip. The move marks the company's effort to improve the performance of the previous generation, which was criticized for being slow, while also facing rising component costs that have forced selling prices above $1,100.

Both devices are designed to prioritize portability over raw power. The 12-inch Surface Pro remains a tablet with a kickstand that can be turned into a pseudo-laptop via the $150 Surface Pro keyboard sold separately. Meanwhile, the Surface Laptop 13 is a compact version of Microsoft's standard notebook design, weighing just 2.7 pounds. Both screens now have a brightness level of 500 nits, 25 percent brighter than the previous models.

Performance improvements are the main focus. Microsoft claims the Snapdragon X2 Plus delivers 60 percent better graphics, 95 percent faster on-device AI, and 18 percent higher battery efficiency than the previous generation. For Office productivity, the chip is claimed to be 18 percent more responsive. These claims address user complaints that the previous Surface generation was too slow for everyday tasks.

The sharp price increase—from previously under $1,000—is caused by a global RAM price surge that some observers have dubbed "RAMaggedon." This phenomenon has also affected many other PC manufacturers, forcing them to raise selling prices. For Indonesian consumers, this increase may narrow premium device options, especially since Surface products are not officially sold in Indonesia and must be imported at additional cost.

Beyond hardware, Microsoft launched the Microsoft Ink Canvas app, a pen-based experience with AI for sketching, annotating, generating images, and summarizing text directly on the canvas. The app will be available in the Microsoft Store on October 13 for other Surface devices. There is also a new Surface mouse priced at $80 with haptic features that let users feel Windows 11 interactions such as window snapping.

According to Microsoft, the Snapdragon X2 Plus brings significant improvements that make these compact Surface devices worth considering for those who were previously hesitant due to performance issues.

For the Indonesian market, the arrival of the Surface Pro 12 and Laptop 13 does not immediately change the premium laptop landscape. Nevertheless, the Snapdragon X2 Plus chip innovation could drive competition in the ARM laptop segment, which is slowly gaining attention in Southeast Asia. Users in Indonesia who want these devices must be prepared to dig deeper into their pockets for import costs and taxes.

With increasingly high prices and competition from other brands such as Apple and Lenovo, Microsoft appears to be targeting the mobile professional segment that prioritizes portability.
