BBC Brings Sitcom 'Rambling': Mark Bonnar and Ashley Jensen Unite in the Scottish Highlands

BBC has once again strengthened its comedy lineup by announcing its latest project titled Rambling, a one-episode special sitcom that will feature an acting duo of Mark Bonnar and Ashley Jensen. The announcement marks a reunion for the two after they previously appeared together in the series Catastrophe, as well as a strategic move by BBC to offer light yet substantial viewing amid competition from global streaming platforms.

In the sitcom set in the Scottish countryside, Bonnar plays Gerry, a man obsessed with order and careful planning. Meanwhile, Jensen plays Cat, a person who tends to be chaotic and easily gets lost even on the way to a parking lot. The two are described as an impossible pair to bring together, yet fate forces them to walk together on a mountain trail. BBC said in a press release that Gerry is trying to fulfill a promise to his brother who has just died, while Cat has just been expelled from a walking group she had hoped would be a new start in her life.

Although packaged as a comedy, Rambling touches on deeper themes such as loss, loneliness, and the human need for connection. The script was written by Iain Connell and Sharon Young, who previously collaborated on the series The Scotts. According to Ashley Jensen, the script they wrote is "about nothing and everything"—smart, honest, touching, and funny. She also said she was happy to return to the BBC comedy unit, where she started her career, and was excited about the challenge of filming in the harsh Scottish landscape.

Mark Bonnar expressed his joy at playing the character Gerry, which he said was different from his previous roles. He praised the script written by Connell and Young as a funny and beautiful work. "I've never played anyone like Gerry before," he said. For him, the opportunity to act again with Jensen was an added value that made the project even more special.

Meanwhile, Navi Lamba from BBC Comedy added that the best comedy often comes from bringing together people who don't fit, and Rambling does that very well.
