The gaming industry has another experimental title that blends two genres at once. Wired Productions and Glee-Cheese have officially announced Mr. Records, a rhythm adventure that combines arcade rhythm mechanics with vinyl shop management simulation. The news came with a debut trailer showing off a psychedelic visual style and a lineup of original songs. For PlayStation 5 owners, the title can already be added to the wishlist on the PlayStation Store, although a release date has not been confirmed.
Unlike conventional rhythm games that only demand timing precision, Mr. Records offers a dual gameplay structure. During the day, players take on the role of George, a record shop owner who must serve customers, sell vinyl, open new stock, and uncover the life stories of the people around him. When night falls, George can "break into" the music of every record he collects, exploring a colorful, surreal dream world. Each level presents a variety of challenges, from rhythm battles and chase sequences to other mini-games.
On his adventure, George is accompanied by a loyal dog named Buzz. Every record he collects reveals George's dreams, memories, and regrets, reinforcing a narrative dimension rarely found in rhythm games. The record shop itself holds various photos that players can explore to uncover the character's past. According to the developer, almost all exploration options require players to align their movements with the beat of the song, making rhythm the game's main foundation.
"We want to create an experience that not only tests reflexes, but also invites players to dive into emotions through music," said a Glee-Cheese representative in the official announcement.
The decision to bring Mr. Records to Nintendo Switch 2 is also worth noting. Nintendo's latest-generation console has not been officially released, but a number of developers have already expressed support. This move signals that Wired Productions and Glee-Cheese want to reach rhythm game fans across platforms, including the Japanese market known for its love of music-themed games. Besides Mr. Records, a recent report says that Media Molecule is working on a project similar to Animal Crossing, reinforcing indications that PlayStation is starting to venture into genres closely associated with Nintendo.
For the Indonesian market, the arrival of Mr. Records could potentially expand the rhythm game demographic that has so far been dominated by titles such as Osu! or Muse Dash. The combination of music, farming, and shop management could attract casual gamers looking for a relaxing yet still challenging experience. However, the main challenge remains price and platform availability. If the retail price in Indonesia is too high, the game risks being enjoyed only by a limited segment. On the other hand, the PC demo ahead of Steam Next Fest can serve as an effective free trial to gauge local market response.
With the wave of rhythm games continuing to emerge, will Mr. Records be able to steal attention amid tight competition? The answer will become clear when the demo is released and the official launch date is announced.
