Singer Joe Jonas has revealed an awkward moment from his teenage years when he tried to win over his first love by wearing too much cologne. The 37-year-old admitted that his move backfired, leaving his scent noticeable several rows behind him.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Jonas recalled that the incident happened during his final year at school before he switched to homeschooling. He attended a musical theater performance where his brother was appearing and sat next to the girl he liked. “I wore way too much cologne. You could probably smell it from five rows away,” he said.
The incident became a valuable lesson for Jonas, now known as a member of the Jonas Brothers. He realized that wearing fragrance does not always have to mean sticking to the same variant. “I always thought one scent forever. It turns out you can choose,” he added.
Jonas's collaboration with Kenneth Cole as a global brand ambassador marks a new chapter in his career. He said he was happy to learn more about the world of fragrance, especially in the brand's latest campaign. “It's fun to be able to make sure the scent is amazing, and it is,” he said.
“I don't envy anyone in this industry right now. There's more scrutiny. Everything happens faster, but we also have the chance to explain ourselves faster,” Jonas told The Hollywood Reporter.
Jonas compared the dynamics of the entertainment industry when he started his career with today's conditions. Back then, he said, artists could only hope not to become the subject of negative news. Now, they can quickly clarify through platforms like TikTok. “At least we can immediately say, ‘Hey, I didn't say that’,” he said.
For fans in Indonesia, Jonas's story may feel familiar. Many of us have had awkward moments while trying to make the best impression on someone we liked. But for Jonas, the experience also highlights how public pressure on celebrities has changed drastically over the past two decades.
In Indonesia, the entertainment industry faces similar challenges. Social media speeds up the spread of information, but it also gives artists room to respond to issues directly. This creates a more dynamic landscape, where fans can interact directly with their idols, but also increases the risk of misunderstandings.
Going forward, Jonas hopes to continue developing his music career while expanding his role in the fashion and beauty world. Meanwhile, fans are waiting to see whether the Jonas Brothers will release a new album or embark on a world tour that might include Indonesia as one of its destinations.
