Twitch CEO Dan Clancy estimates that Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) multiplayer features will not be available alongside the main game's launch, but will instead appear in 2027. Clancy made this statement in an interview with Bloomberg on the sidelines of the Tokyo Game Show last September, based on direct discussions between his team and Rockstar Games. To date, Rockstar has not provided official confirmation regarding this claim.
Clancy revealed that his team has spent a significant amount of time discussing Rockstar's plans, including how to integrate content creators into the GTA 6 ecosystem. He projects a major surge when the base game is released, followed by an even larger wave when the multiplayer mode launches the following year. Given the reported base game release schedule of November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, "the following year" refers to 2027.
However, Clancy's statement is purely an expectation, not an official schedule from Rockstar. The New York-based studio has never publicly announced GTA 6's multiplayer mode, the successor to GTA Online, or a timeline for online play. According to a Tweaktown report, Rockstar previously described GTA 6 as a single-player experience at launch.
The gap between Clancy's statement and Rockstar's confirmation is a crucial point to note. Clancy does have direct access to Rockstar through creator strategy discussions, giving his views more weight than ordinary speculation. Nevertheless, the information remains unverified and cannot be considered a definitive schedule from within the studio.
Why is the GTA 6 multiplayer issue attracting so much attention? The answer lies in the success of GTA Online. That product has become an unceasing revenue engine, extending the commercial life of GTA V, released in 2013, well into the 2020s. The pattern of separating single-player and multiplayer launches also aligns with Rockstar's previous strategy, while simultaneously benefiting Twitch commercially. With a one-year gap, the Amazon-owned streaming platform could experience two waves of creator surges: at the base game's release and when the online mode arrives.
Clancy has a financial interest in highlighting this scenario, regardless of what Rockstar actually plans. This doesn't necessarily make his prediction wrong, but it should be weighed critically. What's clear is that until Rockstar speaks, 2027 is the most plausible estimate currently available.
"We've spent a lot of time talking to Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how to engage our creators. You'll see a huge surge with GTA 6, but then an even bigger surge the following year when they launch multiplayer." – Dan Clancy, CEO Twitch, in an interview with Bloomberg.
For gamers and content creators in Indonesia, this information is an important signal for developing long-term strategies. If multiplayer truly arrives in 2027, streamers and content creators in the country will have more than a year to prepare for the second wave. On the other hand, Indonesia's large gaming market—with a significant GTA player population—needs to observe whether Rockstar will release local servers or collaborate with service providers to reduce latency. Without adequate infrastructure support, the online gaming experience could be hampered, especially for players outside Java.
To date, Rockstar is still known as a studio reluctant to leak plans before they are truly ready. They maintain full control over official announcements and are never rushed. Meanwhile, Clancy and Twitch clearly have an interest in building a narrative that GTA 6 will be a major catalyst for the streaming industry. The question is, will Rockstar follow a pattern similar to GTA Online with a one-year gap, or will it surprise the market with a faster multiplayer launch? Until there's an official statement, 2027 is the most well-founded estimate—worth knowing, but not yet an absolute benchmark.
