Tottenham Paid IDR 600 Billion for Tel, But Free Agent Madueke Now Shines at Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur is once again under scrutiny after their decision to acquire Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich for £30 million (approximately IDR 600 billion) in the summer of 2025 has yet to yield results. Meanwhile, Noni Madueke—a player they released for free in 2018—is now shining with Arsenal and the English national team. This contrast has become a subject of debate among English football pundits.

Tel, a 21-year-old French winger, has only registered 259 minutes in the Premier League this season without a single goal, assist, or big chance created. He was even substituted during last week's League Cup match against Liverpool after a minimal contribution. Coach Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly losing patience and plans to bench Tel when they host Aston Villa this weekend.

On the other hand, Madueke, who left Tottenham's academy at the age of 16 to join PSV Eindhoven, has now transformed into a formidable winger. After shining at Chelsea, he was brought to Arsenal for a transfer fee of £52 million in the summer of 2025. With The Gunners, the 23-year-old helped his team win the Premier League title and performed impressively at the World Cup with England.

Tottenham's decision to release Madueke without a transfer fee has become an irony in itself. The London-born player chose to leave because he felt his chances of breaking into the Spurs first team at the time were very slim.
