Academy Award-winning actor Michael B. Jordan has revealed plans to take a break from the Hollywood spotlight. The 39-year-old plans to spend most of 2027 taking a complete rest from acting, after finishing his ambitious project, The Thomas Crown Affair, which will hit theaters next spring.
The decision is not without reason. Jordan admitted his body "went on strike" right after he won the Oscar for his dual roles as Smoke and Stack in the film Sinners earlier this year. He fell ill a day after the awards ceremony, reportedly due to extreme exhaustion that had built up throughout the busy awards season. In an interview with Vogue, he recalled how his body seemed to say, "You've reached the finish line, now it's time to pause."
The illness forced him to undergo four days of IV treatment, so he could not celebrate his win with friends who had traveled all the way from New Jersey. "They ordered food, chatted, laughed as they remembered that night, told stories to one another, and reminisced about everything. Meanwhile, I could only lie in bed," he said, describing his disappointment.
Behind his decision to take a break, Jordan also harbors a big ambition: he wants to be recognized as one of the greatest actors of all time. "I don't know if I'll be satisfied just being a working character actor. My competitiveness pushes me to be named as one of the greats," he said. He is also reworking the heist film The Thomas Crown Affair as director and star, and promises an approach different from the Steve McQueen (1968) and Pierce Brosnan (1999) versions. According to him, the figure of a billionaire who commits crimes just for fun is no longer relevant to today's audience tastes.
"I think audiences today don't want to see a billionaire or millionaire doing something foolish just for fun," Jordan said.
Interestingly, Jordan also mentioned his interest in anime and half-jokingly raised the possibility of leaving the film world to pursue the Japanese medium. "Maybe I'll quit everything and make anime for the rest of my life," he joked.
Indonesian Context: Lessons for the Domestic Entertainment Industry
Jordan's decision to prioritize mental and physical health amid the pressures of the global entertainment industry serves as a mirror for artists in Indonesia. The country's film and entertainment industry is also known for tight shooting schedules, demands for popularity, and high public expectations. Not long ago, several Indonesian actors and musicians openly discussed burnout and the importance of taking a break. Jordan's move could set a precedent that taking time off is not a sign of weakness, but a strategy for sustaining a long-term career.
In addition, his statement about wanting to be recognized "among the greats" illustrates a universal competitive mentality, including among Indonesian artists who often pursue international recognition. However, Jordan shows that such ambition must be balanced with an awareness of the limits of the body and mind.
Going forward, the public will wait to see whether Jordan's hiatus actually materializes, or whether he will instead become involved in unexpected new projects. What is clear is that his decision sends a strong message: even an Oscar-caliber star needs room to breathe. Will the global entertainment industry, including Indonesia's, begin to adopt a more humane work culture?
