Hamburg secured a dramatic 3-2 win over hosts Hoffenheim in the fifth matchday of the Bundesliga at PreZero Arena on Saturday (27/9/2025). The decisive goal came from substitute Miro Muheim in the 94th minute, sealing the first three points for Merlin Polzin's side on the road this season.
The win felt special because Hamburg had trailed 1-2 after Hoffenheim turned the game around in the 53rd minute through a curling strike from Bambasé Conté. However, the red card shown to Hoffenheim defender Bernardo two minutes later changed the course of the match. Playing with ten men, Hoffenheim struggled to withstand Hamburg's onslaught for the rest of the game.
Hamburg had in fact been the more aggressive side from the start. They took the lead in the 12th minute through Yussuf Poulsen, who reacted quickly to pounce on the rebound from Nicolás Capaldo's shot that hit the post. Hoffenheim equalized in first-half injury time through an own goal by Sebastiaan Bornauw, who inadvertently touched the ball amid a scramble from Vladimír Coufal's corner.
Hamburg's comeback owed much to Polzin's decision to bring on Terem Moffi, Kofi Amoako, and Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit in the second half. Moffi, a new arrival, scored his first goal for HSV in the 83rd minute with a header from a Muheim cross. Earlier, Otto Stange had a goal in the 80th minute, but it was disallowed by VAR for handball.
"We never gave up. The substitutes brought new energy, and Muheim showed his quality in the crucial moment," said Merlin Polzin in the post-match press conference.
For Hoffenheim, the defeat extends their negative run at home. Despite having led, the loss of Bernardo left the back line fragile. Hoffenheim coach Pellegrino Matarazzo lamented the referee's decision to give Bernardo a second yellow card. "That red card changed everything. We lost momentum, and Hamburg made the most of it," he said.
For Hamburg, the win is valuable momentum ahead of a packed schedule. They will host RB Leipzig next week, while Hoffenheim travel to Werder Bremen. The big question: can Hamburg maintain their consistency, or was this just a fleeting win?
