Manchester United's Striker Crisis: Carrick Urged to Promote Amir Ibragimov, the Academy's 'New Rooney'

Manchester United have recorded another grim milestone with their worst start to a Premier League season, triggering speculation that manager Michael Carrick must overhaul the attack immediately. Although Marcus Rashford has been statistically productive by creating 13 chances (third-most in the league), his actual contribution in goals or assists has been nil. The situation is compounded by an injury that forced Rashford to withdraw from the England squad, indicating that his presence in the starting XI does not automatically solve the team's finishing problems.
Carrick's formation change, deploying Matheus Cunha as a false nine, has drawn criticism. Cunha, signed for a hefty fee, looks uncomfortable in that role. Empirical evidence shows Cunha's best performances come when he returns to the left wing, such as when he scored against Fulham and in the win over Sabah. Rashford's presence on the left has shifted Cunha from his natural position, creating an imbalance in the attacking unit that has long been United's strength.
With limited options due to injuries to Sesko and Zirkzee, plus Amad Diallo's absence, Carrick is being urged to look at the academy. The name Amir Ibragimov has emerged as a strong candidate to fill the gap up front. The 18-year-old was previously dubbed "the next Wayne Rooney" by his brother, Ibrahim. Ibragimov has shown rapid development by moving into a more central role, and his youth-level statistics are highly promising: 23 goal involvements in 46 appearances for the U18s, plus 5 goals and assists in 17 matches for the U21s.
"With Zirkzee and Sesko still struggling, and Rashford not a natural central player, perhaps it is time for Amir Ibragimov to step up to the first team," wrote a Football FanCast analyst, highlighting the young player's opportunity.
The decision to promote Ibragimov could be a strategic move for INEOS in planning the club's future. Rashford's contract, which expires in 2028, is a consideration in itself. If Ibragimov can adapt quickly, United may no longer need to rely on Rashford in the long term. However, relying on a young player amid Premier League pressure is a big risk, especially with the high expectations surrounding Old Trafford.
The question now is whether Carrick dares to take the gamble by giving Ibragimov a chance, or whether he will stick with the current formation despite far-from-satisfactory results. This decision will affect not only this season but also the club's long-term direction. If Ibragimov succeeds, United could have a world-class striker without spending big in the transfer market. Conversely, failure could worsen an already difficult situation.
