PlayStation 5 has finally been confirmed to get Forza Horizon 6 only on January 26, 2027. The confirmation came from Sony Interactive Entertainment on Thursday, after months of conflicting rumors. Previously, developer Playground Games had denied the delay, while apologizing for the lack of communication about content updates and bug fixes.
The delay marks a significant shift from the initial promise. When it first announced the release date, Playground Games said the PS5 version would follow in 2026. Now, the Xbox and PC exclusivity window is confirmed to be longer than promised, though not as long as some fans feared. For owners of Sony's console, the confirmed date at least ends the uncertainty that had sparked disappointment on social media.
Behind the technical delay lies a larger corporate dynamic. The move coincides with what has been called a major "reset" in the Xbox division—a period marked by thousands of layoffs and the sale of several studios. Some observers say Microsoft is now more cautious about releasing games on PlayStation. Recently, Halo: Campaign Evolved did launch on PS5, but a similar plan for Gears of War: E-Day was reportedly quietly canceled. The decision on Forza Horizon 6 is also a signal of whether Xbox will keep bringing its major franchises to rival platforms.
The Forza Horizon franchise is not just another racing game. Since its debut, the series has become one of the industry's best-selling properties, with a loyal fan base across platforms. Its arrival on PS5 was previously an interesting experiment: Forza Horizon 5, arriving late, still managed to hit fantastic sales figures. That is why delaying the sequel is seen as risky, especially when the PlayStation player base is already established and waiting for the next installment.
"We apologize for the lack of communication regarding content updates and fixes," Playground Games wrote on X, some time before Sony's official announcement.
From a business standpoint, the delay creates a dilemma. On one hand, Xbox has an interest in maintaining its own platform's appeal by extending the exclusivity period. On the other, holding back the PS5 release means delaying major revenue potential from a user base that has proven willing to buy. Alinea Analytics estimates Forza Horizon 6 has already notched more than 7.4 million units sold and US$534.3 million in revenue before touching Sony's console—a figure that shows how large the untapped market is.
For Indonesia's game industry, this dynamic mirrors how platform exclusivity remains a sharp negotiating tool. Gamers in the country, most of whom rely on PlayStation consoles or PCs, will feel the impact directly: the PS5 version must wait longer, while PC and Xbox owners can already hit the road since May. This phenomenon also underscores that global corporate decisions often clash with community expectations that are increasingly vocal on social media.
Going forward, the big question is no longer about the date, but about the direction of Xbox's strategy. If Forza Horizon 6 still comes to PS5—albeit delayed—will the next series follow the same path? Or will Xbox instead close the door further to rival platforms? The answer will be seen in how Microsoft manages its other major franchises over the next two years.
