Arsenal have reportedly expressed interest in SC Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic as they look to strengthen a forward line that has been under scrutiny. According to a Football Insider report, the Gunners are now competing with Manchester United and Chelsea for the 23-year-old's signature. However, the three Premier League clubs will likely have to wait until the summer transfer window, as Freiburg have no plans to let the player leave in January.
Matanovic has emerged as one of the standout names after his impressive performances for Freiburg this season. The Croatia international has racked up six goals and two assists in seven matches across all competitions, making him one of the most prolific strikers in the Bundesliga. That form has led his club to value him at around ยฃ50 million (approximately Rp1 trillion), and a number of European giants have begun monitoring his situation.
Arsenal themselves are looking for a centre-forward who could serve as an alternative to Julian Alvarez, who stayed at Atletico Madrid after a failed move last summer. Manager Mikel Arteta is said to still want reinforcements in attack, especially after Manchester City were found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules. That situation opens the door for Arsenal to try to approach Erling Haaland, although a move for the Norwegian striker to the Emirates Stadium would be very difficult given the rivalry between the two clubs.
Arsenal legend Paul Merson previously questioned the Gunners' forward line's ability to compete in the Champions League without a top-class striker. He argued that Kai Havertz has the qualities of an intelligent footballer but is not enough to score 20 goals per season. "I'm a massive fan of Kai Havertz. He works hard and makes the right decisions. But I don't think he will score 20 goals in a season," Merson said, as quoted by Football FanCast.
Even so, Matanovic is not the only target. Arsenal have also been linked with a number of other names, including Haaland. However, the chances of bringing in Matanovic in January are slim, as Freiburg want to keep him at least until the end of the season. The Bundesliga club are aware that his transfer value could still rise if he performs consistently for the rest of the campaign.
For Arsenal, signing Matanovic could be a strategic long-term move. The 193 cm tall player has a physical advantage that talent scout Jacek Kulig described as "fantastic physical strength". Last season, he was one of Freiburg's most important players, averaging 0.63 goals per 90 minutes, the highest in the squad. However, he has never experienced the Champions League atmosphere, so it remains doubtful whether he could shine immediately at the highest level.
Arsenal's decision to pursue Matanovic is also driven by an urgent need for an out-and-out striker. So far, Arteta has more often played Havertz as a false nine, while Gabriel Jesus has been plagued by injuries. Matanovic's arrival is expected to add a new dimension to the attack, especially in aerial duels and finishing.
On the other hand, competition with Manchester United and Chelsea will make negotiations tough. Both clubs are also looking for young strikers with great potential, and Matanovic is on their radar. Freiburg will not easily let go of their prized asset without a suitable offer.
If the transfer materialises in the summer, Arsenal will get a striker who is still young, hungry for goals, and has the ideal physique for the Premier League. However, whether Matanovic can rise to the challenge at a higher level, including the Champions League, remains a big question mark. What is clear is that the upcoming summer transfer window will be a crucial moment for the future of Arsenal's forward line.
