Marc Marquez got his 2026 Japanese MotoGP weekend off to a winning start in the sprint race at Motegi Circuit on Saturday (3/10). However, the Ducati rider refused to underestimate Jorge Martin, who finished third, given that Sunday's main race (4/10) will cover twice the distance and could reshape the competitive picture.
In a tightly contested sprint race, Marquez had to work hard against pressure from Diogo Moreira, who finished second, and Martin in third. The win is valuable momentum for Marquez, especially as statistics show that sprint race winners at Motegi often go on to dominate the main race. Even so, Marquez is aware that a grand prix has different dynamics, particularly regarding tire management and consistent pace.
"Jorge showed incredible speed, and so did Bezzecchi and Acosta. We'll see; anything can happen in the race," Marquez said, as quoted by Motosan. He added that tomorrow's race will run twice the number of laps, so he hopes to repeat the positive feeling he had in the sprint race.
"Martin was ahead of me, so he was indeed faster. We know how strong Aprilia is over a single lap. But in terms of race pace, I was able to be very consistent."
Marquez's remarks highlighted the strength of the Aprilia ridden by Martin, especially in qualifying. Martin took pole position, while Marquez had to settle for starting second. Even so, Marquez stressed that his race pace was far more competitive, and he is determined not to repeat his qualifying mistakes.
The sprint race win also boosted Marquez's confidence. He said he made a few small adjustments to his bike that made him feel more comfortable and able to go faster. "It felt good today, an enjoyable race. I'm happy with the riding feeling," he said.
The competition at the 2026 Japanese MotoGP is increasingly intriguing because several riders such as Marco Bezzecchi and Pedro Acosta also showed impressive form. This indicates the main race will not be easy for Marquez, even though he has the sprint win as momentum. Weather and tire strategy will be the main deciding factors.
For MotoGP fans in Indonesia, the 2026 Japanese MotoGP main race can be watched via live broadcast on Sunday (4/10) in the afternoon WIB. Support for favorite riders remains a draw in itself, especially with this season's title race getting tighter.
With the speed shown by Martin and Aprilia, as well as Marquez's consistency, the Motegi main race has the potential to be one of the most thrilling of the season. Will Marquez convert his sprint win into a top podium finish, or will Martin once again show Aprilia's dominance? The answer will be revealed over 24 laps of the main race.
