Amazon unexpectedly announced a sweeping refresh of its entire e-reader lineup, covering the latest-generation Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft. This is the first time in several years that Amazon has updated three product lines at once, rather than just one or two models as usual. For e-reader fans, the moment marks a new chapter in the competition among digital reading devices that are increasingly lighter, thinner, and more functional.
The entry-level Kindle now weighs just 140 grams, down from 158 grams in the previous version, and is 6.85 mm thick. For the first time, the front display is flat without a recess, giving it a more modern look. The device still carries a 6-inch 300 ppi screen and 16 GB of storage, with a starting price of US$149.99. It is available in ube (light lavender) and graphite. There is also a variant with an aluminum back for US$189.99 that offers 32 GB of storage and color options of seaglass green and alpine green.
The Kindle Paperwhite continues the slim and light theme. This model has long had a flat, water-resistant display and a 7-inch size. Prices start at US$199.99 for 16 GB of storage, or US$249.99 for the Signature Edition with 32 GB and an aluminum body. Its main advantage is battery life twice that of the regular Kindle, at 12 weeks compared with 6 weeks. Available colors include graphite for the standard version, and graphite and seaglass green for the Signature Edition.
The Kindle Colorsoft, the latest 7-inch model, has also been updated. Amazon claims the colors it produces now look more paper-like, and the device is thinner and lighter. It is priced at US$289.99 for the graphite version, and US$319.99 for the Signature Edition in graphite and fig. Unfortunately, the Signature Edition has not been confirmed for the UK market. All models are already available for pre-order, with some shipping within days.
Beyond the main devices, Amazon introduced accessories that had been absent from its ecosystem. The Kindle Click, sold for US$34.99, lets users turn pages or adjust brightness with a single press, useful when reading at the beach or on a treadmill. There is also the Kindle Page Turn Cover for US$79.99, which brings back physical page-turn buttons like those on the Kindle Oasis. The move answers loyal users who have missed physical controls.
"This simultaneous refresh shows Amazon wants to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive e-reader segment, especially with color-screen devices arriving from rivals," said a technology analyst.
For the Indonesian market, this launch could affect the availability and pricing of e-readers at online stores and official distributors. Although Amazon has not announced an official release date for Indonesia, gadget fans usually rely on importers or personal-shopping services. The arrival of color models and new accessories could boost demand, especially among professional readers and students looking for an alternative to physical books.
With this move, Amazon is not only refreshing its product portfolio but also reaffirming the industry's direction: digital reading devices are becoming lighter, longer-lasting, and richer in features. The question is, will rivals like Kobo or Boox respond with similar innovation soon? What is clear is that readers now have more choices to enjoy books without a heavy burden in their bags.
