Mourning has enveloped the extended family of Soekarno. Muhammad Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra, the youngest son of Indonesia's first president, died on Saturday (26/9) at Siloam Semanggi Hospital in Jakarta at the age of 73. PDIP Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto confirmed that the body will be buried at Karet Bivak Cemetery in Central Jakarta, next to the grave of his mother, Fatmawati.
"Mas Guruh's body is already at the residence, and the burial is planned next to Ibu Fatmawati," Hasto said at the mourning house on Saturday (26/9). He has not, however, detailed the exact schedule for the funeral procession. The family is still waiting for the arrival of relatives and public figures to pay their last respects.
Guruh was born in Jakarta on 13 January 1953, the last child of Soekarno's marriage to Fatmawati. His position as the younger brother of Indonesia's fifth president, Megawati Soekarnoputri, placed him at the core of one of the country's most influential political dynasties. Yet the path he took was not entirely political: from a young age, Guruh was better known as a choreographer, songwriter, and driving force behind arts groups.
Guruh's education reflected a blend of tradition and cosmopolitanism. He attended Perguruan Cikini and SMA Negeri 25 Jakarta, then studied Archaeology at the University of Amsterdam until 1974. He earned a bachelor's degree in Public Administration from STIAMI (2005โ2008), followed by a master's in Human Resource Management in 2010. This background shaped his unique way of combining art, culture, and public administration.
In the arts, Guruh founded Swara Mahardika and GSP Production, and was involved in the groups Guruh Gipsy and Gank Pegangsaan alongside Keenan Nasution, Abadi Soesman, and Chrisye. His compositions, such as "Kala Sang Surya Tenggelam", "Melati Suci", "Zamrud Khatulistiwa", "Lenggang Puspita", "Mahadaya Cinta", and "Galih dan Ratna", became part of the canon of Indonesian popular music. His works often voiced reflections on Indonesianness, nature, and love.
"Almarhum Bapak Mohammad Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra bin Sukarno has passed away to the mercy of Allah at the age of 73," said Hasto Kristiyanto.
In politics, Guruh joined PDI in 1982 and remained loyal through its transformation into PDIP in 1999. He served as a member of the House of Representatives for five terms (1999โ2024) from the East Java electoral district. Although he never held an executive post, his presence in parliament added its own color, particularly in advocacy for culture and education.
Guruh's passing marks the end of a chapter in the history of the Soekarno family. He was one of the few figures able to bridge Bung Karno's legacy with the dynamics of contemporary politics without losing his identity as an artist. For PDIP, he was a reminder of the party's historical roots; for the public, he was a songwriter whose works remain alive on radio and digital platforms.
The burial beside Fatmawati is not merely a matter of grave layout. It symbolizes the closing of the circle of Soekarno and Fatmawati's immediate family, and a reminder that their cultural and political legacy remains relevant in Indonesia today. The funeral procession is expected to be attended by a number of national figures, though the details have not been announced.
Looking ahead, one question remains: who will tend the artistic and intellectual legacy of Guruh Soekarnoputra? The family, the party, or the younger generation that grew up with his songs? The answer will determine whether his mark becomes merely a historical record or continues to inspire.
