The German national team must accept a bitter reality ahead of their second UEFA Nations League match against Greece in Augsburg on Sunday (27/9). Two key players, Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich) and Kai Havertz (Arsenal), have been confirmed to leave the training camp due to injury. Musiala suffered a torn muscle in his right thigh, detected through an MRI after he complained of pain during warm-up before the match against the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Meanwhile, Havertz was withdrawn in the 30th minute of that match, which ended 1-1, due to a similar muscle problem.
The decision was officially announced by the German Football Association (DFB) last Thursday. The absence of both players is a heavy blow for Germany's new coach, Jรผrgen Klopp, who only took charge of the team in his first match. Musiala, who was supposed to be the attacking engine, had to be replaced by Nadiem Amiri (Mainz) from the start of the match. Havertz's position was filled by Younes Ebnoutalib of Eintracht Frankfurt. Both must now undergo recovery and will not feature for Der Panzer in the match against Greece.
The DFB moved quickly by calling up two replacements. Florian Wirtz, now at Liverpool, and Jonathan Burkardt of Eintracht Frankfurt, were initially projected to reinforce Germany in the last two Nations League matches against Serbia (1 October) and Greece (4 October). However, due to urgent need, both immediately joined the main squad earlier. This step was taken to maintain team depth given the packed schedule and the risk of further injuries.
"We have to lose two important players, but this is a chance for others to show their quality. Wirtz and Burkardt are ready," said an internal DFB source, as quoted from German media reports.
For the Indonesian public, the dynamics within the German national team reflect how vulnerable big teams are to injuries to star players. The packed European leagues often leave players fatigued and prone to injury when representing their country. This is also a lesson for the management of the Indonesian national team, which often faces similar problems, especially ahead of major tournaments. Player load management and rotation are key to keeping performance stable.
Klopp faces his first tactical test. Without Musiala and Havertz, he must rework the attacking line. Wirtz and Burkardt are expected to provide a new dimension. Wirtz is known as a dynamic playmaker with strong game vision, while Burkardt has a sharp goal instinct. Both have a golden opportunity to prove themselves on the international stage.
The match against Greece will be a proving ground for Germany, which is in a period of transition. A defeat or a draw could add pressure on Klopp. Conversely, a win would strengthen the team's foundation ahead of the following matches. The German public certainly hopes their team can bounce back even without its two main stars.
Going forward, injury management will be a main concern. Will the DFB change its approach to calling up players? Or is this merely part of the unavoidable risk of modern football? What is clear is that the match against Greece will be an early indicator of Germany's resilience under Klopp's command.
